Mount balusters and railings. How to fix balusters and railings - installation options

The guardrail of the stairs gives it a finished look and is responsible for the safety of movement along the steps.

The installation method of the enclosing structure depends on the type of staircase. If the staircase is on the kosoura, then the balusters are attached directly to the steps, and the supporting posts - to the floor or extreme steps. In the case when the supporting elements are bowstrings, then balusters are attached directly to them.

How to fix wooden balusters to a wooden staircase and floor at the cottage

Fastening balusters to the stairs can be done using:

  • self-tapping screws;
  • dowels;
  • hairpins.

The most reliable and technologically advanced is the third option, which deserves a detailed description. Installation of balusters with studs or bolts consists of the following steps:

Railing

In order to connect the railing with balusters, you must do the following:

On balustrades, where the fence must support a weight of 100 kg, it is necessary to responsibly treat the fastening of the handrail to the support posts. To do this, I use a capercaillie bolt or zip bolt.

Wooden posts

If the support poles are installed on the steps, then the process of their installation is similar to the fastening of balusters.

Holes are drilled in the posts and studs with a diameter of 10 mm are screwed in. Holes are also made in the steps and, for reliability, dripped into the inside of wood glue. At the final stage, screw the post until it stops. With this method of installing poles, the lower stage is attached to the floor with an anchor bolt. Subsequently, this fastening place is hidden under a pillar.

Fixing the support post on the floor is more difficult. Previously, it was performed using a capercaillie bolt. The difficulty lies in the fact that it is possible to twist the hardware only if a special groove with an oblique angle is cut out at the bottom of the column.

Therefore, it is not surprising that carpentry masters are increasingly choosing the method of fastening wooden elements with a zip bolt.

What is a zipbolt

Zipbolt is a metal rod measuring 2.8 * 1.4 cm, made of red-hot metal. Complete with a pin is a gearbox that provides rotation, transmitted from one plane to another using a bevel gear.

The zip bolt provides quick and reliable fastening of the handrails to the support posts and the pillar to the floor.

The process of installing a column using a stud screw with a reducer consists of several stages:

This simple device relieves the masters of the need to arrange a complex groove for a bolt capercaillie.

Fastening to a bowstring

As already mentioned, if the stairs are on bowstrings, then balusters are attached to them. They can simply be screwed on the side from the outside or mounted on the upper edge.

The first method is simple, but loses in appearance. Therefore, the second method of installing the fence is often used. Balusters can be fixed directly on a bowstring or through a baluster.

In the first embodiment, studs or dowels are used for fastening. The installation process consists of the following steps:

  1. Trimming the upper and lower edges of the balusters taking into account the angle of inclination of the stairs;
  2. Marking the arrangement of balusters on the bowstring;
  3. Preparing a hole for a dowel or hairpin on a bowstring and balusters;
  4. Securing dowels or studs in a baluster using PVA;
  5. Screwing a baluster into a bowstring.

If cylindrical balusters are used, then holes are drilled in the string a little larger than the diameter of the baluster. Glue is added to the hole and balusters are inserted.

How to install balusters

The baluster is a wooden rail with a groove, which is installed on top of the bowstring.

The fastening of balusters through the baluster begins with its installation. In the lower part of the balustrade there is a groove corresponding to the width of the bowstring, allowing you to put it on top of the bowstring. Fixation is performed using glue or screws.

Next, balusters are installed on pre-designated places on the balusters and fixed with screws. The screw is screwed so that it is positioned obliquely in the baluster and perpendicular to the board. The self-tapping screws must be flush with the plane of the board.

The holes formed between the balusters are covered with a decorative strip.

How to attach a tree to a tree

So, in order for the fastening of the structural parts of the stairs to be reliable, studs with a diameter of 8-10 mm are used.

You can also apply the traditional method of fastening wooden elements with a dowel and fix the mount with PVA glue. Less responsible nodes are connected with screws and self-tapping screws. The disadvantage of this fastening is that the hardware caps are visible from the outside. But they can be hidden with putty made from wood glue and sawdust.

A staircase with two (or more) steps is complemented by a fence and railing. A beginner builder will have to install balusters on a wooden staircase with his own hands.This requirement is fixed in the standards regarding the safety of movement of people who use the stairs.

The installation of such structures should be carried out without violations, with strict observance of all the necessary heights and inter-post passes.

What are stair railings for wooden stairs made of?

In most cases, it is about wood. Both soft and hard woods are used. The choice is determined by the strength, hardness, prestige of the material, its affordability. Oak and beech are the absolute favorites here, indicators of wealth and respectability. Pine and linden are used by craftsmen who prefer to equip their own home with their own hands.

Such popularity of wood is explained by the fact that these raw materials are extremely easily processed and finished manually by milling, carving or painting. There are unusually spectacular and amazing results that are not achievable in mass production.

General rules

When building a staircase, you must adhere to certain requirements. By definition, fences are installed on them in order to make moving up and down as comfortable and safe as possible. While walking, a man holds his hand on the handrail. Therefore, the railing should be located at the most optimal height.

To adults feel confident, fences are fixed at a meter mark (± 10 cm). If children grow up in the family, then the installation of an additional handrail will be required at half height.

Balusters (racks) should be separated from each other at a distance of not less than 60 cm. In the space between adjacent supports, it is necessary to fix vertical or horizontal elements. Unfortunately, often the internal staircases of private houses gap with voids threatening for young households.

When flights of stairs are located directly against the wall, it is advisable to install a railing 5-7 cm behind the wall plane.

How to install balusters

The main function of balusters in the stairs is decorative and protective. Before installing balusters on a wooden staircase, it is necessary to clearly determine the standards inherent in the mounted version.

To prevent the baby’s head between the racks, you need to double the number of balusters, thus filling the gaps.

Fixation of metal balusters is made using special fasteners. Wooden posts are held by screws, dowels and glue. Pillars are flat, square, round, oval. The outlines of the latter can vary, since these parameters do not carry constructive values.

Such wooden racks consist of:

  1. Central part. It represents a decorative segment.
  2. Grounds. The part is a support (for a baluster made of wood), therefore, it has slightly larger dimensions than is necessary for installing a fence. In the future, this stock will be needed in order to adjust the desired height.
  3. Supports for railings, which are connected directly to the railings of balusters or sub-perilnik.

Mounting studs on a bowstring

The most common build option. In this case, self-tapping screws are not useful for fixing balusters with their own hands.

First you need to take a wooden post. In the middle of it you need to drill a small hole (12 mm in diameter and 8 cm deep).

Balusters on the stairs are cut at the right angle using an end saw. With large differences in altitude, each step is measured separately.

Drilled holes are equipped with galvanized studs (M6 thread). Zinc coating resists rust well.

At the next stage, a series of holes (13-14 mm in diameter and almost 8 cm deep) are drilled in the string body.

After making holes, the installation of balusters in place begins (the studs are in the finished recesses).

To ensure the accuracy of the layout, it is best to use the laser level, which gives an ideal line. Now it remains only to hoist the handrail onto the stair balusters. The latter is glued to sub-mounted attached to the racks. There are options in which self-tapping screws are used instead of glue.

Dowel mount

Since the weight in the stairs falls on the supporting posts, the balusters on the stairs can be fixed on the dowels made of wood.

The whole process is carried out in the following sequence:

  1. First, steps are marked, as well as the lower parts of the balusters.
  2. Holes of equal diameter and depth are made.
  3. PVA glue is poured into them. Dowels are inserted there.
  4. Next is the installation of balusters, in which the recesses are filled with adhesive.
  5. After this, the structure is maintained for 2-3 hours (during this time the glue should grasp well).

Now you can hoist the railing on a wooden staircase.

Self-tapping

This method is the simplest and most affordable way to fix wooden balusters and railings with your own hands. It is better to use stainless steel fasteners. Steps (supports) are reliably pulled together with a guard.

First you should take the column and equip it with a self-tapping screw. The latter is screwed so that the pointed end stands out a little.

In this way, the preparation of all balusters is carried out. Next, the column is installed, the level is determined. In this case, the self-tapping screw is completely screwed in (on the head).

The fastening of the decorative balusters is carried out in accordance with the marking “created” by the sharp ends of the wrapped self-tapping screws.

Numerous instructions on how to fix balusters on wooden stairs indicate that it is advisable to twist the screws at an angle, with a shallow recess of the cap. After this recess should be covered with wax for wood.

Things to remember when mounting balusters

In the process of installation, it is advisable to remember certain norms and standards of fences. Do not forget about some of the working points. So:

  1. The design of a wooden staircase in which there are forged balusters, it is desirable to carefully process using various protective equipment. Otherwise, natural material may be damaged.
  2. When assembling an object, one must take into account the permissible load with which the supports and steps have to cope. In other words, heavy railing can deform the entire structure.
  3. The fastening hardware should have good "stiff" characteristics. It is not recommended to use nails. This cheap and easy fastener has a smooth slippery structure, so the fastener will loosen pretty quickly. The thread of the self-tapping screws resists the loosening of the balusters, but with the physical impact of the rack weaken.

Wooden handrails are fixed on the sides of the racks with screws. Spiked joints are considered more durable. In this version, the elements in the handrails are equipped with spikes, and the upper parts of the supports are supplemented with corresponding sockets. The spikes are fixed in them with glue.

Video in which the correct installation of the baluster is clearly demonstrated.

To fasten the railing and balusters on the bowstring, you can use metal studs. They must be glued into the holes that are located in the lower parts of the supports. Holes are made in the bowstring. After that, balusters are hoisted on nests.

According to the same method, dowel joints are made. Since the holes here have a larger diameter, it is required to make them taking into account what section has a wooden block. If the holes are smaller than 60x60, then this connection method should not be used.

Instead of a conclusion

The procedure for fixing balusters and railings from a tree can not be called too difficult a process. Here you will not need particularly complex tools. It is enough to arm yourself with one screwdriver, as well as a set of various attachments to it.

Video with the process of marking the stairs and installing balusters.

However, the solution to this issue should be approached carefully and responsibly, so as not to spoil the whole thing. Experience suggests: following all points of the instruction, good results can be achieved.

Equipping your home you need to take care of security. A staircase can become a serious threat to human health and life if it is not equipped with a railing. Mounting the support posts, securing balusters, mounting the filling - these and other operations must be performed correctly when installing the stair railings with your own hands.

Installing railing from different materials will require different tools and skills. But the device of stair railings is the same. They necessarily include support racks and handrails. The free space between the posts can be filled with balusters, girders, patterned structures and sheet material. There are general installation recommendations for all stair railings. Railing installation usually includes the following steps:

  • Installation of the main support pillars, they are located on the upper and lower ends of the flight of stairs.
  • The marking that defines the interval between balusters, intermediate racks.
  • Installation of balusters, racks, installation of fillings.
  • Mounting handrails.

The support posts themselves should not be higher than 1 m, a height of 0.9 m is considered optimal. The recommended distance between neighboring balusters is 0.15 m, not more.

Wooden fences

With your own hands, making the railing is the easiest way out of wood. But fastening them with nails is not advisable. This option is very quickly shaken and becomes dangerous. The reliability of a wooden structure can only be achieved by using studs, screws or dowels. The stud option will require a hole in the end of the bottom of the baluster. The hole depth is not more than 8 cm. The diameter is usually chosen equal to 1.2 cm. It is advisable to choose the studs with galvanized ones - they are protected from corrosion. Being inserted into the hole and fixed with glue, the hairpin should protrude 5-7 centimeters. Response recesses are drilled in steps, the baluster is mounted using glue.

How to install balusters on wooden dowels? Recesses will also be required here, but their diameter should be larger than in the previous embodiment. Dowels are mounted in recesses on PVA glue. Then install the baluster and align its position using a level or plumb line. It will take two to three hours for the glue to fully seize, after which you can begin to mount the handrails.

Fastening balusters with self-tapping screws is the easiest way. Consider how to fix balusters with screws. First, the screw is screwed at an angle into the baluster so that its tip comes out at the end, but just a little bit. Then the support is placed on a step or floor in the place where it will stand in the future, the screw is screwed to the end. The hat must be recessed, for this you can pre-drill a recess suitable for it.

It should be noted that the railing can be attached not only to the steps of the stairs, floor, but also to the supporting beams, in particular to bowstrings. Installing the baluster on the bowstring from above, you need to saw off its lower edge at the right angle to get the most accurate vertical. If the racks are mounted to the bowstrings on the side, holes for the corresponding fasteners are drilled in the side faces of the bowstring.

Metal railing

Metal enclosures are sold, as a rule, already with all the necessary fasteners - a complete set of screws, hinges and brackets is provided to the buyer along with the railing. It remains only to fix them. Manufacturers provide for the installation of such railings on supports made of both metal and stone, concrete or wood. To make the DIY installation the least time-consuming, the metal railing already has all the required holes and recesses.

Stainless steel fences are installed on a concrete base in several stages. One of the options for implementationmounting:

  • Recesses for studs are drilled on the floor or on the steps of the stairs. They are cleaned from dust remaining after drilling.
  • The recesses are filled with glue, studs are installed.
  • Mounting angles and plates are mounted to the studs with a nut.
  • The support posts are mounted with special screws or welded to the plates. The vertical should be controlled by a plumb line or level.
  • Handrails are being installed. This is done either using bolts or welding.
  • The last step is grinding and grouting.

Installation of a metal staircase

The concrete version of the railing differs from others, primarily by its massiveness. Manipulating the installation of such fences is not difficult to do with your own hands, but you will have to exert physical strength. Most likely, this work alone will not be possible. However, it is possible to make half-balusters; during installation, they will need to be assembled, “glued” half of the solution. With such a connection, reinforcement is often used. How to fasten? It is necessary thatthemthe upper and lower ends had protruding reinforcement.  She will allow to fix a rack on a floor in the place of its installation.

The recesses provided for this in the floor must be at least 50 mm in depth. When installing, protruding reinforcement is placed strictly vertically in the recess and poured with cement mortar. The fittings of the upper ends of the installed balusters are connected by welding, after which the handrails are mounted.

Installation of concrete balusters

Glass fencing

There are various installation methods. Most often, glass elements are mounted on a stainless steel frame attached to the floor - sheets of stalinite or triplex. Glass fencing, as a rule, is provided with detailed installation instructions, so that you can carry out installation work with your own hands. But in some cases it is better to entrust this matter to specialists. In the case of mounting glass on the connectors, vertical racks with special fasteners are used. Two parallel connectors with holes provide reliable fixation of the glass between them. The hole should be in the glass. The inserted screw holds the glass firmly. Each rack is equipped with two or three connectors.

Another method, called monetary, involves the presence of special brackets on racks. There is a thread on the bracket, glass with a hole is mounted on the bracket. This connection is fixed with a screw cap similar to a coin.

In both methods described, glass is fixed through an opening. But perhaps a more complete fastening is a frameless method. Here, guide rails with grooves are used. Protective glass is inserted into these grooves.

Glass balusters are mounted to the stairs using metal nozzles and hinges.

In the case of installing flat glass balusters, the sliding method is used. 20 mm grooves are made in the steps, into which the flat racks are retracted.

Balusters - part of the staircase enclosure, vertical supports on which the handrail is placed. If desired, they can also be done with your own hands. We will talk about the simplest way to make and fasten balusters on the stairs.

Tools and materials that you will need in order to make and assemble balusters yourself

Instruments:

  • a circular saw;
  • drill with thin drills;
  • level and plumb;
  • clamps.

Materials:

  • wood beam;
  • mounting glue;
  • fasteners (screws, studs or dowels).

Is it possible to make balusters yourself or buy ready-made ones - the only option?

So, you decided to make the stairs with your own hands and don’t know which side to approach the balusters - which seems to be the most difficult element of the staircase construction to perform at home. Shatter this myth. Balusters can be made even by a beginner. But, of course, not the same as in the photo below, simpler. And how to attach balusters to the stairs is an elementary task.

Designer balusters made of elite wood, the official supplier in Russia - Moscow stairs

For the simplest balusters, you don’t need a lathe - for their manufacture it is enough to take wooden blocks or planks and cut them into sizes - you get flat or square (rectangular) balusters. By the way, you can even decorate flat balusters with a pattern - make a template from cardboard, copy it with a pencil on each blank, and then cut the pattern with a jigsaw. You can also make curly volume balusters on your own, but this process requires a whole set of chisels or a lathe and, much more critical, experience with wood.

   The most simple balusters made by yourself and put on stilettos

To determine how much wood to buy, consider the following:

  • the height of the fence should be at least 0.9 m;
  • balusters should be separated from each other by a distance of 10-15 cm;
  • the thickness (width) of the products, in principle, remains at your discretion: the main thing is that it looks beautiful and is reliable and durable.

For a length of about 3 m with a guard on two sides, approximately 0.5 cc will be needed. meters of timber. If you make a fence of the cheapest wood - pine - the cost of the beam will be 5 thousand rubles.

In order for the wooden parts of the stairs to acquire a more accurate appearance, as well as to protect against rot, fungus and even mechanical damage, they must be covered with protective compounds. By the way, do not forget, this should be done before attaching the balusters to the stairs, and not after. To do this, you can use a combination of ordinary stain and transparent varnish or use a special oil for the stairs, combining decorative and protective properties. The cost of oil is 3,000 rubles, the stain plus varnish complex will cost less, but covering them is somewhat longer and more difficult.

Add here the purchase of all the necessary tools - fasteners, brushes, glue, etc. - and the total cost of making a staircase with your own hands will be somewhere around 10,000 rubles.

And now about the main thing - how to install balusters on the stairs

The balusters are mounted either directly on the step (if the staircase has a construction on the braces), or on a bowstring - if the staircase is bowstring. In any case, the first thing to do before installing the balusters on the stairs is to make markings - with a chalk or marker. As a rule, one baluster is one step. If the steps are very wide, then to reduce the gaps between the supports, you can put two balusters per step. In any case, all structural elements should be located at an equal distance from each other.

   Correctly installed balusters

The first way. How balusters are attached to.
  When installing the supports directly on the steps, the base of the baluster remains flat, a metal stud or a wooden dowel is inserted into it. In the step, a hole for the dowel is drilled and filled with mounting glue; similarly prepare the lower base of the baluster itself. Mounting on the stud is the same, only the hole will be slightly smaller in diameter.

After this, the balusters must be carefully calibrated with the help of a level - they must be perfectly aligned so that the balustrade really fulfills its function and is strong and reliable. Temporary fastening of balusters on top is carried out on the rail using clamps.

After we made sure that the balusters are completely even, you can install the railing. To ensure that this part of the fence is reliable and accurate, a sub-window is mounted on the balusters themselves - it is most convenient to do this with screws. And on top of the sub-window, a handrail is attached with screws.

The second way. How to install balusters on the stairs on the strings.
  If the staircase is made on bowstrings, balusters will need to be mounted directly on the bowstring - top or side. In the first case, the lower base of each baluster must be cut at an angle and similarly attached with dowels or hairpins.

   Securing baluster on dowel

Mounting on a side string requires the use of screws or self-tapping screws. By the way, it is in this case that it is better to use balusters made from a regular board - flat.

   So you need to cut the bottom base of the balusters when attaching them to a bow

Independent manufacture and installation of balusters: is the game worth the candle

We talked about how to install balusters on the stairs of two different types of structures - oblique and bowstring. Now a few numbers. We have already calculated that the balusters of our own production will cost somewhere in 10 000 p. The cost of a simple pine baluster in the stores of stairs - 150-200 p. For a standard comfortable marching staircase we need 32 balusters - and they will cost 6,400 r. At the same time, these will not be ordinary wooden columns, but beautiful, neatly carved and polished supports. Everything is clear here - if you decide to make a staircase of wood on your own, then buy at least ready-made balusters for it - save not only time, but also money.

And continuing to debunk the myth that self-made is always cheaper than bought in a store, we note that this applies to the whole staircase as a whole. The cost of self-construction of the stairs is about 30 000 p. For this money, stores of finished stairs will offer you not just a good, but a huge selection of different models and types of stairs. For example, there is always such a staircase in our warehouse - a great option both for a summer residence (because it’s cheap) and for a country house (because it’s convenient and durable).

   Wooden staircase FAVORITE LMP-12

This is the FAVORITE LMP-12 model worth 19,900 r.

But the option is a little more expensive (but still cheaper than building it yourself), but more original:

   Ladder LS-01M for home and garden

This staircase costs 20,891 p. and differs in more compact sizes - such models are worth considering if the structure is needed in an already built house with a limited opening under the stairs.

Why are ready-made stairs cheaper than self-built? There is no catch here - just manufacturers of wooden stairs work with wholesale suppliers of wood, therefore, they have the opportunity to purchase materials at low prices. In addition, large companies, including the Moscow stairs mentioned above, have long found out which of the suppliers can provide really high-quality wood, and, of course, do not produce stairs with knots or chips. Add to this cheaper than manual labor conveyor production - and you get a lower cost of stairs. Well, if you really want to make the stairs with your own hands and just sleep and see how to install the balusters on the stairs, just assemble the finished structure yourself - all the finished stairs are accompanied by detailed instructions that allow you to do this without any problems and with minimal time costs.

We make markings for pillars and balusters

The layout for the installation of balusters we do as follows.

To avoid any deviations, I set aside 60 mm from the lateral edge of the upper stage.

I put the same 60 mm from the edge of the lower step.

I make marks and put the guide rail on them.

With the help of a corner I put marks at the beginning and at the end of each step.

Thus, deviations will be minimal and all balusters will stand smoothly.The next step is to mark the distance between balusters.

We install a pillar at the top of the stairs on the second floor.

To do this, take a bolt 10 x 100 mm, weld it to a metal embedded plate.

As long as the pillar is not connected by railings and balusters, it staggers, but when the whole structure is assembled, it will stand firmly.

Now install the bottom post, on the site between the upper and lower marches of the stairs. From the overhang point of the step, lay 55 mm and drill a hole for the bolt on which the pole will be mounted.

The column width is 100 mm, but we put aside a little more than half of this value - 55 mm, so that there is a gap of 5 mm between the column and the step. So the pillar will not rub against the step and creak.

We turn to how to arrange balusters. Again we take a corner and make a mark on the second step.

We mark the place where the overhang of the upper stage ends and lay 1 cm from this point.

We use small trimmings of the base of the baluster as a projection.

The distance from the step board to the baluster we get 4.5 cm.

We lay the same 4.5 cm from each approaching board at each step.

We measure the distance from the extreme baluster on the upper step to the pillar - it turns out to be 8 cm.

The width of the tread on the steps with us is 26 cm, so the distance between the balusters should be 13 cm (exactly half).

The second baluster on the step will stand at a distance of 7 cm from the edge of the step and at a distance of 8 cm from the next lower baluster, taking into account 1 cm of the indent.

Given the fact that the gap between the column on the site and the step is 0.5 cm, the distance to the baluster there will be slightly less - 7.5 cm.

  The main thing! The following sequence must be observed: first the columns are placed, and then the balusters are placed in such a way that between the upper and lower columns and the nearest balusters there are approximately the same distances, with an error within 1-1.5 cm.

How to fix balusters on the stairs evenly and firmly

When installing balusters, we see that the base of two adjacent balusters is not the same. The one that stands at the riser has a higher base than the extreme.

The upper parts are the same for everyone. Initially, all balusters were the same size.

How much do you need to trim the base of the baluster? The baluster leg is 19 cm high.

Since the extreme baluster stands exactly in the middle, then we reduce it by half - by 9.5 cm.

We fasten the balusters to the steps with the help of a self-tapping screw with a hex head.

Be sure to use the puck.

Using a ratchet, we fasten the baluster to the step.

Using the guide and clamps, we fix and tie together all the installed balusters. We verify their position using the level and correlate with the position of the pillars.

  Each baluster is marked with its number corresponding to the number of the step.

Also, on each baluster along the installed guide, a mark is made indicating the cutting line for the installed handrail.

On the reverse side, so that later it would be more convenient to assemble the entire railing structure, marks are also made on the guide itself indicating the position of the balusters.

The position of each of the balusters on the guide is also numbered.

After the balusters were trimmed, they are again installed, according to the numbering, and only after that the support bar is attached to them.

How this whole process looks in real life, you can look at the video:

How to install a stair rail on the second floor of a house

We start by measuring the angle of the handrail with respect to the post.

In accordance with this, we also adjust the angle of inclination of the circular saw, with which we will cut the staircase handrail.

After that, we saw off the edge of the handrail.

We did not manage to cut through to the end, it remains to finish literally 0.5 cm.

We do this with an ordinary hacksaw.

We process the edges with sandpaper.

Repeat the same operation on the other side of the handrail.

We install the handrail and check how it fits to the posts. In the lower part, everything went perfectly, without gaps.

In the upper part we see a small gap and correction is required.

We slightly cut the edge of the handrail and remove the interfering ledge-bump. After eliminating this drawback, the handrail fits snugly on the upper post. When fastening with fasteners, structural elements will fit even more tightly together.

Another point to be noted. Perilina was originally an ordinary beam and we need to make a groove under the support bar on the back.

For this I use the following device. I attach a piece of a wooden beam to the mill with a clamp at a distance of 15 mm from the mill.

This will be the indent from the sides of the handrail.

The groove itself will be 50 mm wide and 5 mm deep - exactly the thickness of the support bar.

You can also watch how to make handrail work in this video:

How to bend the handrail at the bottom of the stairs

The end of the handrail at the bottom of the stairs should be rounded. In this part I will tell you how to do it.

As a blank for the handrail, we use an ordinary beam of 80 x 55 mm.

A board 40 x 100 mm is glued to this beam.

I alternately glued three such elements.

I got a growth to the handrail, on which I previously plotted how the end of the railing would go.

I began to cut the excess with a saw.

Then we begin to process the end of the railing with a manual mill with a diameter of 8 mm, removing non-sawn residues.

Movements must be performed vertically, since the railing will be twisted with a screw and smoothed.

We cut off the handrail almost along the line that was originally drawn.

Now we take the belt sander and align the sides of the handrail.

With a small margin, we outline the trim line from the bottom of the handrail.

We also cut off the excess part at the end of the handrail.

The thickness of the handrail at the attachment point with the lower column should correspond to the thickness of the handrail at the baluster. We draw a vertical line and measure, we get 72 mm.

Thus, we made the preparation of a curved handrail using only three tools: a hacksaw, a grinding machine and a turbo machine with a mill.

After processing the handrail we get this option.

It remains to establish two more missing balusters.

As a result, we get such a design.
