  - Vladyka, you graduated from the Academy 25 years ago. What is the most memorable learning experience for you?

- tonsured.

I took it after the third year of the Academy (then I studied 4 years at the seminary and 4 years at the Academy). Then there was ordination into the hierodeacon and a month later in the hieromonk. It was a kind of embodiment of what we read, thought, thought about, what we were preparing for during our studies.

- And something related to the Academy?

- The graduation from the Academy was dramatic. At the end of September 1986, when I was in the 4th year, a fire broke out in the Academy. Five third-year students of the seminary died, and we all very seriously experienced this loss. The guys were very young, in addition, any of us could be in their place.

The premises of the Academy were badly damaged because of the fire: the food department did not work, the assembly hall and the hostel burned down, and the academic church was damaged. So that winter was hard for the whole Academy. We worked hard, helping to restore the buildings, because in 1988 in the Lavra we were preparing to hold the Local Cathedral. So the whole next year after the fire was a grand construction. Of course, not everyone did it qualitatively, because they worked in a hurry, but, nevertheless, the Academy was restored to celebrate the Millennium of the Baptism of Russia.

In the fourth year I was an assistant inspector, by its current name - an assistant to the vice-rector for educational work, and then I was appointed assistant to my classmate, the current archbishop of Tobolsk and Tyumen, Dmitry, who was deputy rector for administrative and economic work. We, the young hieromonks who had just graduated from the Academy, were abandoned for construction work. Not enough experience.

Of course, it was not easy, but, on the other hand, looking back, I see that everything was providential. We happened to participate in the restoration of the Academy and in the preparation of the Anniversary Local Council. These are historical events, and I thank God that He made it possible to be involved in them.

- How do you remember the cathedral?

- In the assembly hall of the Academy there were monitors on which we watched the broadcast of the meetings of the cathedral from the refectory church. I remember how the then rector of the academy, the chairman of the Educational Committee of the Russian Church, Vladyka Alexander in his speech said: "We need to open three more seminaries." Now it’s hard to imagine what these words mean. But then it was something grand. In the Soviet Union there were only three seminaries - Moscow, St. Petersburg and Odessa. And Vladyka said about the discovery of three more. This meant that there was permission to actually open three more seminaries. Then it was not customary to applaud, but these words of the lord were met with applause

And after the cathedral, Kiev, Minsk and Tobolsk seminaries were really opened, where Vladyka Demetrius went. These were all epochal events that indicated that the attitude of the state towards the Church is changing.

- Studying at the seminary, you did not expect such a turn of events?

- Of course not! We did not suspect and did not think that such changes would occur in our state. It seemed that the ideology existing in the state was unshakable and it was impossible to move this stronghold. I remember that we studied in the third year of the seminary, one of our classmates came and said: "Brothers, they give the Don monastery." We laughed him: “Are you kidding? Jokes about something less serious. " It did not even fit in my head that this was possible, because then there could be no question of opening and transferring churches and monasteries. And then they transferred Danilov Monastery (although the first rumors went about the Don) and the situation gradually began to change. We studied and prepared to carry out our ministry in the realities of the Soviet era, when the Church was persecuted, and suddenly, when we graduated from the Academy, these changes broke into our lives. To some extent, we were not ready for this. I had to literally on the go enter into the realities of this new being, focus on the go. Now 25 years behind, and it seems that all this was so recently.

- Do you often meet classmates?

- Once every five years. It is very interesting to meet after not seeing each other for several years. In the years of study, the perception is one: we are all students, we live in a single family, interests, goals. And after that, it’s completely different: study ended, we all scattered to different cities, each with its own line of activity, its obedience. It is interesting to meet, to discuss who serves in what capacity in the Church, what lives, to exchange opinions, memories.

- What do you recall most often?

- How they studied, what happened in the classroom, like skiing, ice skating.

And now we are all changing, getting older, hair is already turning gray, many people have a gray beard ... And it’s interesting to remember what we were 25 years ago, what a joyful time it was.

- And how is it good?

- Students are generally a special time, to some extent carefree, when you do not fully understand what lies ahead. This is a natural state of youth. While you are studying, imagine life a little different from what it really is. And there is some carelessness regarding the future. You do not know what will happen, and until some time you do not need to think about it. We lived, ate, prayed together, and then suddenly scattered in different directions. And, of course, our meetings are very memorable and hurt for the living.

- Probably, not only all students - both theological and secular schools - do not have a clear idea about the realities of life and even about their future. What would you advise so that a person who received a diploma does not “stumble”, does not fall, faced with real life?

- The fact that the student is not aware of how he will live on, naturally. It is important not to give in to the spirit of the times, because the spirit of the times is very crafty.

The world around us is replete with modern technology, provides a shaft of information, and it is important not to get lost in it. And for this you need to have the core of Orthodoxy within you and try to carry it through your whole life

The seminary provides the germ of this rod, and it will have to be strengthened throughout life.

- But how? After all, life in the seminary does not always contribute to this. For example, if a person from childhood or very often happens to be at the altar, can it develop not only an reverent attitude to the shrine, but even something like cynicism?

- From one old bishop, the son of a priest, I heard that his father did not allow him to enter the altar until he was 15-16, so that visiting the altar would not become something mundane. It is impossible to allow everyday life in prayer and in everything else.

- And what about when you need to read, for example, the texts of the Holy Fathers for the exam? After all, here it’s not just that you will read with impiety, but also in a hurry and resent that so much has been written and so voluminously. And there will be no question of accepting the patristic experience.

- There are temptations in this regard. And we always say that education is a two-way process - the acquisition of knowledge and upbringing. And the most important thing here is self-education. And for him you need to create the conditions.

The big plus of the Moscow Theological Academy is that they are in the Trinity-Sergius Lavra. A student can always go to confession or to talk with an experienced confessor. It is of great value that many Lavra confessors studied with us themselves and know the life of the theological school from the inside, so many of the questions students come to them are more than familiar with them and they can give wise advice.

“What other temptations can there be?”

- When a person just crosses the threshold of a spiritual school, he is ready, relatively speaking, to be baptized to every corner. Over time, this goes away. And in church life the same thing: if a person sincerely goes to confession for the first time, he experiences this Sacrament very sharply, and then it becomes something more familiar and, I repeat, everyday. It `s naturally.

“But wrong?”

“Better not to.” And then the internal struggle comes into force.

- And how to set yourself up correctly?

- The most important thing is that a person understands that everyday life or automatism in spiritual life cannot be allowed.

For example, before consecration, a person memorizes certain prayers, because he must know them. But this does not mean that even then these prayers must be said formally. There should not be formalism in the ministry! Temptations are right there. But the process of personal development is not very simple. And if a person himself does not personally think that it is necessary, no spiritual school will force him to do this. But tight control is not part of our task.

- Good. But are these issues at least somehow discussed by older, more experienced people?

- We have course mentors, now we have introduced tutors who exist in order to help a person in his education, study and personal formation. Plus, as I said, there is a clergy.

- Are you naughty?

- Students were naughty at all times. The main thing is that life should not be built solely on violation. Prank is not anger, anger is when it enters the system. And everyone can stumble.

Also in worship. You can know his structure very well. But when you serve yourself, say prayers in a real situation of worship, this is completely different than in the classroom. Prayer must always be prayer. Ideally, making a bloodless sacrifice should always be scary.

- And what kind of experience is it when you yourself perform consecration? After all, few people in the Church can ordain.

- Each time I make consecrations, I recall my consecration. The feeling, the experience that you experience during consecration, is unforgettable. It is impossible to explain.

- Do people perceive consecration differently?

- Yes, in very different ways. Maybe some kind of confusion, and tears - anything. This suggests that a person informally approaches the Sacrament.

- For you, consecrated ordination is what? Joy?

- Yes. The joy that still arrived in our regiment, that the number of those who will serve the Church increased.

- Does a person change after consecration?

- Here I recall the words of St. John Chrysostom, that there are times when the Lord allows a person to feel the effect of grace. And then, as it were, retreats. I had such conditions with tonsure and subsequent consecration.

“But if everything is so good, why does he retreat?”

- As St. John Chrysostom writes, the Lord does not really back down, but gives a person the opportunity to feel what grace is and what it means to achieve a grace-filled state by his own labor. Of course, with the help of God.

On May 29, 2018, the Extraordinary Cathedral of the Estonian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate (EOC MP) was held at the Tallinn Cathedral of the Holy Blessed Grand Duke Alexander Nevsky. The Council held the election of the new Primate of the EOC MP. During the secret ballot, he was elected Eugene, Archbishop of Vereisk, Vicar of His Holiness Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia, Chairman of the Educational Committee of the Russian Orthodox Church, Rector of the Moscow Theological Academy.

At the extraordinary Council, two candidates were previously approved by the Holy Synod for the chair of the Primate of the Estonian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate: 60-year-old Archbishop Evgeny Vereisky and 49-year-old Bishop of Narva and Prichudsky Lazar. As a result of the vote, Archbishop Vereisky Eugene received 74 votes, and the second candidate, Bishop of Narva and Prichudsky Lazar received 37 votes. There were no abstentions; all ballots were recognized as valid.

Lazar, Bishop of Narva and Prichudsky, turned to Vladyka Eugene, Archbishop of Vereisk, with the question: “The Council of the Estonian Orthodox Church has elected you Primate of the Estonian Orthodox Church. Will you accept this election? ”

“I thank the members of the Council for the great trust placed in me. I’ll accept my election as Primate of the Estonian Orthodox Church, subject to the approval of this election by His Holiness Patriarch Kirill, ”answered the Archbishop of Verea.

“Axios!” Proclaimed the bishop of Narva and Prichuda Lazarus.

A thanksgiving service was performed. Upon its completion, the newly elected Primate of the Estonian Orthodox Church, Archbishop Vereisky Eugene, addressed the delegates of the Council of the EOC MP:

“Your Grace! Honorable Fathers! Brothers and sisters!

Once again, I would like to express my gratitude to you for the trust you have shown me today. If His Holiness the Patriarch affirms me, then I humble myself with the election that took place today. We must build our spiritual life, strive for spiritual perfection, and spiritual life involves working on ourselves. May the Lord help us all! And I ask you first of all for prayer support. For any head of the Church cannot do anything without the support of the clergy and laity of the church. ”

Archbishop Vereisky, newly elected Primate of the Estonian Orthodox Church, visited the Alexander Nevsky Cemetery, where he honored the memory of his predecessor, Metropolitan Korniliy. A memorial service was held for the newly-departed Metropolitan of Tallinn and All Estonia, Cornelius, who passed away this spring during Easter Week in his 94th year of life.

At the end of the EOC MP Council, a festive meal was held, after which the Most Eminent Bishop was congratulated on the occasion, wishing him fortresses of spiritual and bodily strength for many years.

Archbishop of Vereisk Eugene  (Valery Germanovich Reshetnikov in the world) was born on October 9, 1957 in Kazakhstan. The future archpastor spent his youth and youth in Kirov, the ancient city of Vyatka, where the locally revered saint Rev. Archimandrite Trifon Vyatsky spent his spiritual service.

The outer outline of the life of the future archpastor developed at first as well as that of many of his peers. After graduating from eight grades of high school, he studied at the Kirov Construction College, where over four years of study he acquired the specialty of a construction technician. Then came military service, which became for him a real school of courage, patience, endurance, not only physical but also spiritual. Atheistic propaganda in the army at that time, although it was routine-primitive, but extremely intrusive. Although the religious convictions of the church-educated young man were not tempted there, it took considerable courage to profess his faith in the difficult circumstances of the army’s life, without showing cowardice or cunning.

After demobilization in 1979, Valery entered the service of the diocesan administration, at the same time fulfilling the duties of sub-akon Vladyka Chrysanthus, Metropolitan of Vyatka and Slobodsky. A year later, on the recommendation of his archpastor, having successfully passed the entrance exams, Valery entered the Moscow Theological Seminary. After graduating from the seminary in 1983, he continued his theological education at the Theological Academy. In his student years, he served as subdeacon of the Bishop Rector of the Moscow Theological Academy and the Seminary of Bishop, and later Archbishop of Dmitrovsky Alexander. Close contact with the bishop, who had extraordinary administrative abilities, was for him a good school for serving the Church in responsible positions.

The years spent in a theological school located within the walls of the ancient Lavra of the Father Superior of the Russian land, St. Sergius of Rado-Nezhsky, strengthened his determination to devote himself entirely to the service of the Church. On July 27, 1986, he received monastic tonsure with him, Eugene, shortly afterwards he was ordained a hierodeacon, and on August 28 of the same year, a hieromonk. Hieromonk Eugene graduated from the Moscow Theological Academy in 1987 with a candidate of theology degree, which he was awarded for the dissertation “Shepherding in the Russian Church in the X-XIII Centuries”. At the end of the academy, he was left in it as a teacher.

When Hieromonk Eugene was still a fourth-year student, on September 27, 1986, on the feast of the Exaltation of the Cross of God by the command of God, a fire broke out in the Academy, in the fire of which five students were killed, the assembly hall burned down, the building of the student hostel was significantly damaged the premises of the academic Po-povskoy temple. The main work on the restoration of buildings destroyed by fire was completed by 1988, when the celebration of the 1000th anniversary of the Baptism of Russia was celebrated. At the final stage of restoration and construction work at the Moscow Theological Academy, hieromonk Evgeny carried the obedience of assistant archimandrite Dimitri (Kapalin), who at that time was the deputy rector of the academy for administrative and economic work and who bore the brunt of the restoration work.

Archbishop Alexander praised the abilities of Hieromonk Evgeny, his exceptional sense of responsibility and devotion to the Russian Orthodox Church. On January 1, 1989, Hieromonk Evgeny was appointed Deputy Rector for Administrative and Economic Affairs and elevated to the rank of Archimandrite. In 1990, Archimandrite Eugene was appointed to an even more responsible position - inspector of the Moscow Theological Seminary.

At that time, the country was experiencing a turning point in its history, gradually the Russian Orthodox Church began to gain freedom, and the nature of church-state relations changed significantly. New opportunities appeared for the reconstruction of the system of spiritual education, which was destroyed during the Soviet era, for the restoration of previously closed theological seminaries and schools. The best administrative and pedagogical forces of the Russian Orthodox Church were directed by the Hierarchy to restore spiritual education.

The Stavropol Spiritual Seminary was one of the first to be restored. On August 6, 1991, by decree of His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II, Archimandrite Eugene was appointed its rector. The new rector, attaching paramount importance to the spiritual education and theological education of future shepherds, at the same time achieved notable successes in strengthening the material base of the Seminary. Thanks to his perseverance, the city authorities transferred to the dioceses and seminaries a spacious bishop’s house adjacent to the cathedral and the seminary, which favorably affected the educational process and the living conditions of the seminarians.

In the first half of the 1990s, the Russian Orthodox Church went through a process of rapid increase in the number of parishes and the multiplication of Wakan clergy. And although in the conditions of church freedom there would be no more legal difficulties for large-scale expansion of the network of theological educational institutions, huge difficulties of a financial and personnel nature arose. In connection with this, a need arose to intensify the activities of the Educational Committee of the Russian Orthodox Church, and on February 26, 1994, archimandrite Evgeny was appointed acting chairman of this synodal department. On April 16, 1994, in the Epiphany Patriarchal Cathedral, the consecration of Archimandrite Eugene as Bishop of Vereisky, Vicar of the Moscow Diocese, led by His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Russia, took place.

On July 18, 1995, Bishop Eugene was appointed rector of the Moscow Theological Academy and Seminary, and on July 18, 1998, by the definition of the Holy Synod, he was confirmed as chairman of the Study Committee. He combines the fulfillment of administrative duties with lecturing on moral theology at the fourth year of the academy, and with reformed programs - lectures on Orthodox asceticism in the graduate school of the academy.

Guided by the decisions of the Bishops' Councils of the Russian Orthodox Church, at each of which he made reports on the status and prospects of the development of spiritual education, as well as the definitions of the Holy Synod and the instructions of the Holy Patriarch, Vladyka Eugene led the case of tremendous ecclesiastical importance - the reform of spiritual schools called to meet immensely increased in comparison with the Soviet past requirements of the present. The goal of this reform was to transform the theological seminary, which prepares pastures for the Russian Orthodox Church, into a full-fledged higher school, and the theological academy into a specialized school, designed to prepare scientific and theological cadres and teachers of theological educational institutions.

The process of reforming theological education was worked out at Moscow theological schools, the experience of which was then borrowed by other theological educational institutions. Thus, the combination in one person of the posts of the chairman of the Training Committee, coordinating and directing the reform process, and the rector of the Moscow Theological Academy and Seminary, who, with the example of his school, sees both the results of the reform and the difficulties and obstacles that come with it faced on the path to its implementation, has proved to be very effective.
