Biography

Childhood

At the age of eight, in the eyes of Bruce Wayne, the robber Joe Chill killed his parents: his father is a doctor, Thomas Wayne and his mother Martha Wayne. Earlier at the same age, little Wayne once, walking around the family estate, fell into a cave filled with bats and was very scared, but his father arrived in time and pulled him out. These events left a big imprint on the life and worldview of Bruce. He has since lived on the Wayne estate under the supervision of Uncle Philip Wayne and the butler Alfred Pennyworth. Bruce spent his youth traveling around the world, perfecting his intellect, spirit and body. He studied various sciences and martial arts.

Youth and education

At the age of 16, the future Batman tried to study at various educational institutions, including Cambridge University. However, he did not stay there for a long time, preferring self-education and training with certain teachers. Bruce Wayne mastered 127 military techniques, including Aikido, Yau-Yang, and Ninjutsu. Among his teachers were the master of stealth Henri Ducard, the African Bushman who trained Wayne in hunting among the "Ghost Tribes of the Ten-eyed Brotherhood", Nepalese monks taught the healing skills and speedy healing of injuries.

Becoming Batman

At the age of 20, Wayne tried to become an FBI employee, but soon decided that he needed to deal with the criminals using their own methods. Following this decision, Wayne began to fight crime in Gotham City on his own and not yet using a bat costume. However, his initial attempts to fight were not so successful until, after another fight with the bandits, after which he nearly died, he, sitting in his office, did not see a bat crashed on a window pane and remembered the incident and fear that he had experienced in childhood falling into a cave with bats. From then on, Bruce Wayne turned into Batman and began using the bat costume as a means of bullying and threatening criminals.

Batman began to operate mainly at night. Persistent rumors began to circulate around the city about a superhero allegedly appearing in Gotham City, fighting alone with crime. Rumors erupted in a real demonstration of Batman's reality when the latter appeared in the daytime and freed a school seized by terrorists. His deed was shown on all the news of various television channels.

Subsequent Heroic Activities

Having declared himself, Batman began to collaborate with Gotham City police officials. The latter created for this a large spotlight with a bat image, during danger, which became active and a circle of light with a bat image in the middle was turned into the sky. The device is called "Bet Signal". In order to combat crime, Bruce Wayne created in a cave, into which he had failed in childhood, his hidden refuge, into which he could get straight from his family estate.

Rethinking Batman's Personality

After assuming that supervillain Alexander Luthor killed his friend and partner Dick Grayson, Batman wanted to kill Luthor, thereby violating his principles of justice. However, it soon became clear that Dick was alive and Batman temporarily left Gotham City to rethink his future activities. He went to the Middle East, accompanied by Robin and Nightwing, where, under the auspices of the Cult of the Ten-eyed People, he repeated his training and honed his endurance.

Returning to Gotham City, Batman faced another problem - he met Ibn al-Ksu "fash, alleged as Batman's son from the criminal Talia al Gul.

Clash of universes

Concerned about possible invasions from other worlds, Batman created an independent global security system to track space breaks, to detect and neutralize characters from other universes.

Alter ego and other Batman personalities

Batman carefully tried to preserve his real identity, however, there are several characters who knew who was hiding under the mask of a bat-man: Superman, Amazing Woman, Flash, Green Lanterns, Kyle Rainer and Alan Scott, Plastic Man, Aquaman Orin, Green Arrow, Nightwing, Jason Todd, Robin, Oracle, Martian Hunter, Alfred, as well as Dr. Lasley Tomkins.

Bruce Wayne

Behind the mask of a human bat lies Bruce Wayne, a billionaire industrialist, playboy and philanthropist. Voices are also different - Batman uses a more bass voice.

Matches Melone

Among other things, Batman also used the identity of the bandit "Matches of Melone" for introduction into the criminal environment. Matches Melone in the past was a gangster who was accused of killing his brother. However, he was not charged because he burned himself. Since then, Melone’s identity has been used by Batman, but there have been problems with this - Melone was often suspected of working for Batman and serving as his spy. Later, a real Melone appeared, who falsified his suicide and proved his innocence in the murder of his brother. But he was soon killed by the bandit Ventriloquist as Batman's spy.

Subsequently, Batman avenged his murder and was even able to save this personality and use it in his future activities. In particular, Batman, using the identity of Melone, was even arrested and held in the Black Gate prison.

Enemies and opponents of Batman

Among Batman's enemies in the comics, characters such as the Joker, Mr. Freeze, the Rag Doll, the Riddler and Two-Faced performed. Among the enemies of Batman, who knew about his real identity, are: Ra "with al Ghul, Hugo Strange, Riddler, Catwoman, Scarecrow, Curse and Khash.

Family and relationships with other superheroes

After the death of the parents of Batman Thomas Wayne Martha Wayne, his uncle Philip Wayne and, in particular, the butler Alfred became the closest people to him. Alfred everywhere gave him support and understanding. One of Batman's closest superheroes is Superman and The Amazing Woman.

Among the partners of Batman are Robin and Betgirl. Batman is also included in such superhero societies as: Justice League, Outsiders, Justice Society and Young Titans. Such membership in one way or another required the relationship between superheroes to achieve the goals of societies. The relationship was sometimes conflicting and suspicious on both sides, in particular Batman himself filed dossiers on other superheroes. And the Justice League, at one time, erased Batman's memory.

Women in Batman's Life

In the life of Batman there were many women to whom he had certain feelings: Catwoman, Amazing Woman, Talia al Ghul, Andrea Byamont, Vicki Vale, Sasha Bordeaux and Zatanna.

Crime Tools

In his activity, Batman uses various kinds of devices, equipment, weapons and other means to achieve the goals of justice and made with the help of Wayne industries. In particular, in close contact with criminals, Batman uses the so-called Batarangs (boomerangs, the shape of which symbolizes the image of a bat), which can be used to defeat the enemy, limit his mobility, etc. Also used are small explosive devices, capsules with tear gas and smoke. An indispensable attribute of Batman is a bat costume, designed to inspire fear in criminals. Batman wears the necessary equipment on his belt, among others, a harpoon gun, a cutter, a paralyzing toxin, etc.

To move in space, Batman can use such vehicles as: Batmobile, Batplan, Batlodka and Battsikl. To combat crime, they are equipped with many necessary devices, meeting the latest technology. The appearance of these vehicles is futuristic and notes a similarity with the image of a bat (however, for example, in the movie Batman: The Beginning Batmobile does not have such similarities).

Comics

The Batman comic book universe is divided into three parts: this is the most classic golden age, followed by the silver age, and, as you might guess, the bronze one. In each of them, Batman changed his images, something new appeared, or someone new in the life of the Dark Knight, the level of seriousness and intricacies of masterpiece detectives rose from the comedy action to the bloody detective. There are so many comic lines about Batman, there is no way to list them all. Also, one should not forget about the Elswords - other worlds, which tells about what would happen if the fate of the hero would have turned out differently.

It's no secret that the DC Comics universe is noticeably different from the real world. New places in famous cities, new cities and even new countries are the details of the DC universe. We continue a series of articles about places that are not found in our world, but which are already familiar on the pages of comics. Today's article is about the darkest city in the world, Gotham. (Gotham City)    and its surroundings. Welcome to the Dark Knight city tour.

Gotham is angry and gloomy for a reason. In time immemorial, even before the foundation of the city, a powerful and evil sorcerer was buried alive at this place. The sorcerer did not die, but fell into hibernation, and his evil seeped into the very soil on which the city was built, and defiled the souls of the inhabitants. When already in “our” time the Sorcerer came out of hibernation and got free, then, having seen the city built on his grave, he took the nickname “Doctor Gotham”. You can read more about this in the Shadowpact # 5 comic.

Even before the appearance of the sorcerer, who became "Doctor Gotham", at the place where the city later appeared, there lived a tribe of ancient people, Miagani, or "Bat Tribe". Once these people called themselves “Deer People”, but Miagani changed their name when “Batman” saved them from the attack of Vandar Adg (future Vandal Savage) and his Blood Tribe. This man was Bruce Wayne, cast back by Darkside to the past and forced to jump in time. Thus, a paradox was created - Batman inspired people from the past to create a cult of Batman. The Miagani tribe left the Gotham Earth in search of fertile soil when the Black Fire shaman sent damage to the pastures (according to another version, all Miagani were killed by the shaman).

Gotham was founded in the 17th century, and by the 19th century it had already become a very peppy fishing town. In 1799, Darius Wayne began the construction of a luxurious mansion, near which an entrance to a huge cave was discovered. In 1840, Judge Solomon Wayne and architect Cyrus Pinckney started a grandiose development and began to turn a simply medium-sized city into a real metropolis. According to their idea, the city itself had to fight evil - a huge number of gargoyles on the roofs should intimidate residents, forcing them to attend church more often, and the rounded corners of houses should interfere with robbers attacking the victim suddenly. However, the city from this became only worse and darker, and all the beauty created by Wayne and Pinckney was liked only by both of them.

Gotham's first superheroes were Green Lantern (Alan Scott) and Black Canary (Dyne Lance). Also in Gotham for some time the headquarters of the Justice Society was located (Justice Society of America) . However, the crime rate grew and grew, and even with the advent of Batman and his allies, Gotham did not turn into a dream city.

During the event known as the Cataclysm and the epic Nobody Earth that followed, Gotham was destroyed by an earthquake of 7.6, but it was rebuilt with the help of Lex Luthor. At the same time in Gotham, there were fewer gloomy-gothic details, and he began to resemble “New York Night” more.

So, with a brief summary of the story, let's move on to the sights.

Arkham Hospital

   DC Comics

One of the most notable attractions of Gotham is the Arkham hospital, named after the gloomy city, which appears in many works of the master of dark fiction and mysticism, Howard Lovecraft. The location of the hospital has changed several times. Initially, it was located outside the city, then, when Bane blew up Arkham, the hospital moved to a mansion on Mersey Island. In the movie Batman: The Beginning, Arkham Hospital is located in the slum area known as the Narrows. The film was successful, after which the Narrows district appeared in comics. Arkham is the most famous psychiatric hospital in DC comics, all psychotic supervillains are sent there (who often run away from there). Several of Arkham’s employees themselves became nuts, including Arkham’s founder and his nephew, psychiatrist Harlin Quinzel and former security chief, Lyle Bolton.

Park row

  DC Comics

Gotham is generally very, very dangerous, but one of the most dangerous streets is Park Row, located in the dysfunctional East End area. Batman himself claims that a night walk along Park Row is tantamount to suicide. It was on this street that Bruce Wayne's parents were killed, after which she was renamed "Criminal Alley" (Crime Alley)   . Also on this street is the free clinic of Dr. Leslie Tompkins.

Ace Chemicals

  DC Comics

Ace Chemicals is a plant that does not have any security system at all. Otherwise, how to explain the fact that for a bunch of criminals of various varieties he became a passage yard? The plant gave the DC Joker the universe (safety is also bad there, a person can easily plunge into a vat with dangerous chemicals) and for some time served as a base for the Joker. Sometimes one gets the impression that this is a completely nobody-like-use-like-type plant that transfers from one supervillain to another more often than Batman changes Robins.

Wayne Enterprises

  DC Comics

Wayne Enterprises is one of the oldest and most influential companies on Earth, along with LexCorp. It was founded by Solomon Wayne himself, and since then the company has had a huge variety of branches and subsidiaries. In addition, the company acquired smaller companies, such as Kord Industries (owned by Ted Kord, Blue Beetle) and Holt Holding (a company owned by Michael Holt, who became Mr. Terrifik). The company has founded and supported several charitable foundations.

Wayne Manor and Wayne Tower

  DC Comics

Worth mentioning is the Wayne Manor and Wayne Tower. The estate, built by Darius Wayne, has long been the home of the Wayne family. Under the estate is a large cave with several exits - Bet Cave. In a powerful earthquake, the estate in this cave collapsed, but later the estate was rebuilt, and the cave did not disappear. And Wayne Tower is one of the highest buildings in Gotham, which once housed the main office of Wayne Enterprises.

Iceberg

  DC Comics

And this article will be completed by a vicious institution called "Iceberg"   (Iceberg Lounge)    - A restaurant owned by Oswald Koblepot, also known as Penguin. Having left active participation in the criminal life of Gotham, Penguin opened a completely legal restaurant ... in the underground premises of which there is a sale of all kinds of illegal items, drugs, smuggling and simply useful information.

In 1966, the big premiere of the movie about the Batman narrator took place, about his struggle with the main sworn enemies in the person of the Joker, the Riddler, the Penguin and the Catwoman who came together to capture high-ranking UN politicians in order to demand huge amounts of money for their ransom. Of course, Batman and his brave team go to the den of villains in order to interfere with their insidious plans. It should be noted that the film was shot in the wake of the success of the television series of the same name (discussed below) that was broadcast on television in those years.

A strange question, because together with Superman he is one of the most famous fictional characters in the world, on the example of which more than one generation of readers was brought up. In addition, many films are devoted to Batman. How did the image of this character evolve throughout his “film career”?

Who is Batman: Character Description

This superhero first appeared on the pages of comics in 1939.

Soon he received a separate series and a team of assistants in the person of Robin, Beegerl, Commissioner Gordon and others. Over the course of his long “literary career,” this character has managed to gain popularity around the world. As soon as they did not name a hero named Batman: The Dark Knight, Guardian of Gotham, The best detective in the world, etc.

Appearing shortly after the Great Depression, it is the embodiment of the hopes of ordinary citizens for an omnipotent and incorruptible defender of the weak from ruthless criminals and corrupt authorities. A special feature of Batman, which distinguished him from other superheroes, was that he did not possess any superhuman powers and fought evil using his mind, physical dexterity and technical devices. In other words, every reader realized that theoretically he too could become Batman.

No less attractive to the Americans of the late 30s was the alter ego of the hero. While for most characters it was a mystery: who is Batman (photo below), readers knew that under the guise of a valiant crime fighter hides a billionaire and a playboy - Bruce Wayne. The Americans, impoverished after the Great Depression, really wanted to believe in the existence of a noble rich man who was ready to help the poor people, like Wayne.

Times passed, and more and more stories about Batman appeared. In addition, DC periodically restarted the franchise. Despite this, the Dark Knight continued to be loved by more and more new generations of readers.

The appearance of the character on television in 1943 and 1949.

The hero's popularity was so great that 4 years after his debut on the pages of comics, Batman dedicated a whole television series of 15 episodes. The role of the Dark Knight was first played by Lewis Wilson.

In fact, it was a spy series about the confrontation between the United States and Japan, in which, to attract viewers, the main character was made a popular comic book hero - Batman. Despite the fact that he was very far from the canon, thanks to the television series the character has a beta cave. And the devoted keeper of the mystery of who Batman really is, butler Alfred Pennyworth, from a well-fed Bavarian turned into a stiff British.

Mindful of the success of the first television series, after the war ended, it was decided to remove its continuation - “Batman and Robin”. This time, the role of Batman was given to Robert Laurie. Considering that viewers would watch this television series out of habit, its producers did not particularly bother with the script and budget. The result was a very mediocre spectacle.

Adam West as Batman

After the failure of the 1949 series for almost 17 years, films and series were not made about this hero. However, after updating the comic strip, as well as inventing the Dark Knight logo in the mid-60s, it was decided to shoot a new television series.

The leading role was invited with a heroic voice. The 1966 project was incredibly successful. He managed to hold out on air for 3 seasons, in addition, a full-length tape was shot based on his motives with the same cast - “Batman”. The film received audience recognition, and for the next 20 years was the best in its series.

Unlike the rather gloomy atmosphere of comics, the television series and the film with Adam West was more like a light comedy, where good always defeats evil and makes it spectacular and fun. Despite such a clear contradiction to the canon, West is still considered one of the best incarnations of Batman on the screen.

By the way, after the closure of the project, this artist for many years voiced most of the cartoons dedicated to the Defender of Gotham.

Films with Michael Keaton

For more than 20 years, filmmakers have not ventured to release a new project about the Dark Knight. Since each viewer is asked: “Who is Batman?” - invariably answered - “Adam West”, no one believed that it was possible to somehow overshadow the 1966 movie

However, he was not afraid of difficulties and in 1989 released the movie “Batman”, in which Michael Keaton played the Gotham Knight.

This project was truly a turning point in Batman's film biography, because for the first time on the screen he was shown not in a comic vein, as it was before, but as a tragic character tormented by deep emotions.

The dark knight of Keaton lost West’s gloss and pathos, he became more humane and close to the audience, it is not surprising that the picture of Burton collected more than 400 million dollars at the box office and kept the brand of the best of its kind for almost 20 years.

Thanks to the success of the first film, after 3 years the second with the same Michael Keaton was shot - "Batman: Return". Despite the star cast (Danny de Vito and at the box office, she collected less than the first picture. Many believed that this was due to the overly gloomy atmosphere in the film, but true comic book fans, on the contrary, were delighted with this film adaptation.

"Batman forever"

Despite the decline in spectator interest in the Dark Knight, in 1995 it was decided to devote another film to him. At this time, Joel Schumacher replaced Burton in the director's chair, and instead of Keaton, they invited Val Kilmer to the main role.

The new director made the project bright and colorful - to match the Hollywood standards of the 90s. At the same time, Burton’s atmosphere was lost, and the picture, despite the excellent box office, was the weakest in this trilogy.

The audience was attracted by the presence of a huge number of stars: Jim Carrey, Tommy Lee Jones, Chris O'Donnell and Drew Barrymore. It is worth noting that Val Kilmer looked faded against their background and was recognized at that time as one of the worst performers of this role.

"Batman and Robin"

Although the films about the Knight of Gotham became worse with each new one, the audience was still interested in his fate. Therefore, in 1997, Schumacher shot another movie in the series. Since Val Kilmer’s game turned out to be weak, it was decided to take another artist. He was just gaining popularity George Clooney.

Despite his charm, the new artist played even worse than the previous one, creating a puppet Ken with a rubber smile instead of the noble Batman on the screen. In addition, the project itself began to resemble a hackneyed television series, rather than a movie.

Neither the charming Uma Thurman, nor Arnold Schwarzenegger, nor the young Painting received negative reviews, because of which over the next 8 years no one believed that the franchise could still be successful.

Christopher Nolan Trilogy

However, in 2005, aspiring Hollywood director Christopher Nolan, who became famous thanks to the movie "Remember", decides to try to reanimate the cycle. According to his own script, based on the comic books “Year One” and “Long Halloween”, he shoots the movie “Batman: The Beginning”. Christian Bale was invited to the lead role.

The picture was incredibly successful, reaching the level of "Batman" in 1989. In addition, it served as the beginning of a new wave of Batman mania.

The reason for this success was that for the first time in the history of film adaptations of comics about the Dark Knight, the film was able to convey the gloomy spirit of graphic novels in the cycle. In addition, the characters and motivation of the characters, such as Commissioner Gordon (Gary Oldman), Rachel Dawse Carmine Falcone (Tom Wilkinson), Ra’s al Gul (Liam Neeson) and others, were carefully worked out in the tape. In addition, the screen was the first to talk about the years spent by Bruce Wayne away from his native Gotham.

After the tremendous success of the picture, the Batman Knight reappeared on the screen after 3 years in the Nolan film The Dark Knight. This picture was the most successful in the entire movie history of the Dark Knight and collected over a billion box office. In it, Christian Bale again played the role of the Knight of Gotham, confronting the cunning Joker. It is worth noting that in this film for the first time in the neck became mobile.

The last movie in the trilogy was the 2012 film - “The Dark Knight: Revival of the Legend.” In it, for the last time, viewers meet with their favorite artist - Christian Bale.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

The fantastic box-office success of the Nolan trilogy proved that in the new millennium, viewers still remain indifferent to the Knight of Gotham. Therefore, the shooting of The Dark Knight Rises did not have time to finish, as negotiations began on the film adaptation of the Batman v Superman project, abandoned in 2001. The project script was based on the comic book of the same name, but its plot was simplified.

Initially, the role of the Dark Knight was proposed to be played by Bail again, but he refused and the choice of producers fell on Ben Affleck, who previously played the superhero Daredevil.

Despite the luxurious ad campaign for Batman vs. Superman: At the Dawn of Justice, viewers were very skeptical. However, this did not prevent the tape to collect more than 850 million at the box office. Such a tremendous financial success, however, did not soften the critics' attitude to the film - it is recognized as very mediocre. In particular, due to metamorphoses that occurred with Batman. The bold and independent hero, whom Bruce Wayne had known for many years, viewers and readers, in a new film adaptation turns into an envious paranoid. In addition, Ben Affleck, a pretty well-dressed man, despite his muscles, looks like a fat hog amid a fit Henry Cavill.

The irony is that, despite the indignation of some viewers who believe that Affleck, for all his merits, is not suitable for this role, the actor was not only not removed from the project, but also made the upcoming solo film about the Dark Knight directed.

Justice League: Part 1

Competing with Marvel, DC also actively set about creating their own movie universe.

Therefore, they simultaneously shoot several projects at once, in which the Dark Knight appears. So, the movie “Batman vs. Superman: At the Dawn of Justice” became a prequel to the project “Justice League: Part 1”, which is due to be released in autumn 2017.

It is known that Batman, performed by Ben Affleck, will play a dominant role in it. It is also possible that the scriptwriters in this picture will work out the character's character better than this was done in the previous project.

Among other DC projects of recent years, in which the Dark Knight appeared, the film “Suicide Squad”. It is also possible that a superhero appears in the episodes of Wonder Woman, Flash, and Aquamen.

Ben Affleck's Batman motion picture 2018

The shooting of the new movie about the Gotham Knight will start next year. Ben Affleck will not only play Batman again in it, but will also become the director and co-screenwriter of the picture.

It’s hard to imagine how the new Batman will appear before the audience, but the fans believe in the best.

The television series "Gotham"

In addition to numerous movies, there is the television series "Gotham" dedicated to who Batman is and how he became the Dark Knight.

Since, according to the plot, Bruce is still a teenager, the main character is Detective Gordon - Batman's future ally. At the same time, the hero himself rarely participates in events due to his young age. The role of the Dark Knight in the television series "Gotham" is played by David Mazous.

For more than seventy years of "film career", Batman has evolved from a comic character to a protector of the Earth from an alien threat. What surprises await fans of this superhero in the future - it will become known with the exhalation of the Justice League and the new Batman.
