His mother was Spanish and loved to dress up children and taught them the basics of flamenco. His father was a more “mundane” kind, because British blood flowed in his veins, and his work was the most prosaic - a plumber.

Creative vein

Juan Carlos Antonio (this is the full name of the fashion designer) was born 54 years ago in the overseas territory of Great Britain, in Gibraltar. Galliano absorbed his future shocking, courage and brightness of the created images along with the milk of an expansive mother.

The boy went to an English school - for this the family moved to their father's homeland, to London. In the lessons, he was scattered and painted his notebooks and textbook covers with flowers and other patterns - even then a creative streak dozed in it.

Saint Martin's College of Design gladly accepted the future celebrity into its walls, John was one of the best students with well-developed imagination and taste. Gagliano's The Incredibles thesis was enchanting - he took historical French outfits as the basis of the collection (during his studies, he worked part time in the theater, where he was seriously interested in old costumes). The collection consisted of eight costumes - they were immediately taken for sale by the owners of the Brawn’s boutique. This success prevented Galliano from leaving by invitation to New York (there he was waiting for the work of a fashion illustrator). Diana Ross, who visited the store, laid the foundation for a legend named “Galliano”, having bought a beginner's couturier's vest.

Conquer the capital of fashion

John became one of the trendsetters in the British capital, but his collection did not bring much financial success, and he went to conquer Paris. The young genius was not a penny. He was sheltered by a former fellow student, at whose factory the designer began to earn extra money.

The sponsor was still not there, but March 1994 brought the couturier a happy meeting - the editor of the American edition of Vogue Anna Wintour acted as the “fairy godmother”. She supported the young talent and helped finance the Paris debut collection.

The name was inspirational - Fallen Angels. 17 coal-black outfits were shown by supermodels, including Evangelista, Campbell and Moss. Galliano shocked the audience, pouring water on the girls before going onto the podium. Since then, every fashion show was more like a theatrical performance.

"Resuscitation" of the Diorovsky House

The year 1995 brought Galliano a new success - he was asked to become the creative director of the Givenchy fashion house. Then the fashion designer worked for Balenciaga.

And soon he headed the House of Christian Dior. The very first collection, dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the corporation, made a splash. Ethnic and historical motifs, chic pre-war retro artfully intertwined in costumes. This splendor was called "African." The dominance of minimalism of the 1990s was defeated.

John Galliano managed to “reanimate” the Dior style that has become conservative over the years. He took the style icons of different eras as the basis of the collections - from Lucretia Borgia to Scarlett O’Hara. The clothes from "Dior" again began to "adopt" the stars of the stage and cinema. Impeccable cut and the use of new technologies and fabrics - this is what the fashion designer professed.

Following Lagerfeld and Loren Gagliano was awarded the Legion of Honor.

So different lines

In parallel with the work of Christian Dior, the couturier also led the brand John Galliano. These lines were strikingly different.

The first one was chic, characteristic of the works of the great maestro. A woman in clothes from Dior is a kind of cutesy aristocrat of the early twentieth century.

And for his own brand, Galliano was inspired by the life of New York, which did not stop for a minute, by the nightclubs of this noisy metropolis, its rapid rhythm.

In the shows of “John Galliano” the master did not shy himself with any frames, in these performances one could see clowns or dancers frolic against the backdrop of amazing scenery. Here the ball was ruled by a lady with a "dark" past, a regular of dubious cabarets and bars.

"Outcast" but not surrendered

Nothing portended a disaster when, at the end of February 2011, the tabloids and the Internet were full of reports of an unpleasant incident that had happened to the great fashion designer. Being drunk, Galliano allowed himself offensive remarks against people with Asian facial features. It was February 24th in a Parisian bar.

The fashion house of Dior decided to say goodbye to the brawler - his reputation was more dear to them. Indeed, that very evening a drunk fashion designer was detained and accused of anti-Semitism. And on the Internet in a flash a strange video appeared, where a man reminiscent of a couturier almost recognized his love for Hitler.

Not everyone supported the Dior leadership, many colleagues and models, including Natalya Vodyanova, spoke in defense of Galliano, because everyone can make a mistake. Alcohol is to blame for everything - they decided so, because they know the fashion designer as a kind and sensitive person, it’s not clear what kind of demon moved into him then.

The first show after the dismissal of Galliano turned out to be rather sad - the first rows were empty.

In September 2011, the court found the couturier guilty, he had to pay a fine of 6 thousand euros.

But on the "personal front" it was quiet and peaceful - John has been living with stylist Alexis Roche for many years.

In early 2013, Oscar de la Renta turned to the “outcast” - he offered him a studio. Gagliano accepted a helping hand and returned to his beloved work - the new collection again had many rich details and luxurious finishes.

In 2015, the designer made his debut at London Fashion Week as the creative director of Maison Martin Margiela. His new works delighted the public; he was, as usual, quite theatrical.

History of the John Galliano brand and a brief biography of its creator

John Charles Galliano was born November 28, 1960 in Gibraltar, his father was an Englishman with Italian roots, and his mother - a real Spanish, taught flamenco. It is clear that such a colorful couple to their children, and there were three of them in the Gagliano family, conveyed their fiery temperament, original taste and love for bright and unusual things. This was especially noticeable in the outfits that Galliano chose for their children, so John, wherever he went, always attracted attention with his bright and elegant costumes, which played strongly against him after the whole family moved to the UK in 1966. What was perceived as the norm in Gibraltar was puzzling and disapproving of conservative British society, and this fact was clearly demonstrated to young Galliano by his new classmates through intimidation, so that his school days were not a particularly happy period of his life.

Galliano received his professional education at the prestigious St. Martins College of art, which he graduated in 1984. Then, for the first time, his star lit up: at the show his diploma collection of clothes, Les incroyables, which was inspired by the spirit of the French Revolution, was noticed by Joan Burstein and immediately acquired it completely, and then exhibited in her boutique, Browns. The outfits were immediately sold out, and the young designer was first talked about, by the way, one of the first celebrities to spot outfits from Galliano was Diana Ross.

After a successful debut in the same year, Galliano decided to establish his own brand. His talent and skill did not raise any doubts: already in 1987 he was first named the Best Designer of Great Britain, but he obviously could not cope with the organizational part of work, besides he was too keen on going to nightclubs and other entertainment venues. So when John found himself on the verge of bankruptcy in the late 80s, he decided to leave London and move to Paris in order to seek financial support there.

Good luck came almost immediately - in the person of the legendary Editor-in-Chief of American Vogue, Anne Wintour. Her trained eye immediately recognized talent in Galliano, and she introduced it to the eyes of an extremely influential person in society, Sao schulberger, which soon provided John with the necessary financial support to continue his creative work. It was in her Paris mansion that he presented his new collection, which included a total of 17 black dresses, but each of them was absolutely perfect, according to Galliano himself. As models participated in the show Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss. The collection was extremely successful and became a real springboard for the future career of John. Many celebrities joined the admirers of his work, among whom was even herself Princess Diana.

But the grandiose hype that arose around Gagliano attracted the attention of not only royalty, but also influential entrepreneurs. So soon he receives an offer from Bernard Arnaultand already in 1995, Galliano was appointed to the post of Creative Director, which was a definite breakthrough, since he became the first Briton to occupy such a high post in the French fashion house. A year later he was transferred to work in an equally famous fashion house, just in need of a shake-up that would bring him a more modern look and spirit.

For Christian Dior, Galliano gave all the best, but he didn’t forget about his own brand, if before that he was producing exclusively women's clothing, then since 2004 he began to deal with the men's line. A couple of years later, he added to the assortment of accessories, perfumes and even children's clothes.

For the good of Christian Dior, Galliano worked for 15 years, however, on March 1, 2011, the top management of the brand decided that it was time for him to leave this fashion house, since a person who promotes clear anti-Semitism cannot adequately represent such a respected brand on the world stage. The fact is that Galliano, being not in the most sober state and being in one of the bars in the very center of Paris, allowed himself to make a fiery speech, the content of which was clearly offensive to representatives of Judaism. This event was followed by a quick trial and, although John apologized and even allegedly repented, he was sentenced to a fine and asked to vacate the position in Christian Dior.

However, his long-time patroness, Anna Wintour, didn’t leave him here either, and thanks to her patronage, Galliano in 2013 received a temporary job offer at the fashion house.

During his career, in addition to the 4-fold title of Best Designer of the Year in Great Britain, Galliano was also awarded in 2001 Order of the British Empireand in 2008 Legion of Honor, the latter, however, he was deprived in 2012 by presidential decree, apparently this was a consequence of the same ill-fated trick.

Now John Galliano is at the head of the brand. Bill gate, after the scandal, Galliano himself was expelled not only from Dior, but also from his own brand. Geiten is a very progressive and prolific designer, not without reason under his leadership as Creative Director for a while there was not only John Galliano, but also Christian Dior. Under the supervision of Bill, John Galliano releases 32 collections a year, including a full range of women, men, children’s clothes, accessories and perfumes.

John Galliano was born on November 28, 1960 in Gibraltar. When he was 6 years old, his family moved to London. His father is half English, half Italian, his mother is Spanish. He also has a sister. Juan Carlos Antonio Galliano Guillen - this is the full name of John Galliano.

According to Galliano himself at school, he painted “phones and flowers” \u200b\u200ball the time. After leaving school, he studied at the College of Art and Design of St. Martin. Along the way, he worked at the National Theater. After studying at college, John Galliano was going to leave for New York, where he was a fashion illustrator for him. But his thesis, based on the French Revolution, brought him success. The owners of the Brown avant-garde clothing store noticed this work of his, they bought the entire collection and put it on the windows of their store. This would be a first success. Then luck smiled at John Galliano again - Diana Ross came to this boutique and bought his vest. “Parents left for Spain, I settled in their house and scribbled one vest after another,” Galliano recalled. He stayed in London.

But despite the fact that, season after season, he created things that everyone admired, and also was able to present his debut collection at British High Fashion Week, teaming up with hat designer Stephen Jones, it did not bring him much success, including financial.

In the 1990s, Galliano left for Paris. He sleeps on the floor in a friend’s apartment, he has practically no money. For the workshop, one of his friends lends him a room in his factory. Galliano is trying to find at least some financial support. And here the case helps him, he meets the almighty, the editor of the American Vogue. And she appreciated the young designer. It was she who persuaded the Portuguese socialite Sao Schlumberger to provide Galliano for showing her mansion in the center of Paris. At this show, Galliano presented 17 absolutely black dresses, they were demonstrated by the models and with whom he collaborated. This show was seen and highly appreciated by the public. John Galliano again lucky.

In 1995 he was invited to the post of Creative Director of Givenchy House. A year later, he moved to Dior, where he worked until 2011. Along the way, he creates his own fashion house John Galliano. Now Gagliano is torn between the two Houses, releasing 12 collections a year. And while working for Dior, he remains more or less restrained, but for his fashion house Galliano embodies all his wildest fantasies. Moreover, the shows of John Galliano have always been more than the shows, he always had an element of the show, a theater. And the appearance of the fashion designer himself, John Galliano, at the end of the show, was no less than a show, he was always unpredictable, he always tried on himself a new image that could surprise the audience. It was not without reason that they said about him that "Gagliano has the same approach to defile as Spielberg’s approach to cinema."

Galliano regarded his work for “Dior” as an opportunity to shake off dust from the old House, which, before coming to Galliano, was already associated exclusively with clothes for middle-aged ladies, to revive the popularity of the name Dior. And this Galliano undoubtedly succeeded. It was with him that at the Dior shows, world celebrities began to appear in the forefront.

According to Galliano, he draws inspiration from all around the world - he is inspired by “walks, music, travels, films”. He also seeks inspiration in historical events. The world remembered his dress - a straitjacket. And John Galliano himself considers for himself the most memorable event was the “Fallen Angels” show, before which he doused the models with water, because then it was fashionable to wear dresses wet.

Gagliano also had a collection “based on Russian motives” - “Flight of Princess Lucretia from Bolshevik Russia”, this collection was inspired by the story of Princess Anastasia, daughter of Nicholas II, who allegedly managed to survive.

John Galliano is a tireless provocateur, avant-garde artist, a man with a constantly rich imagination, ready to bring all his wildest ideas to life. He was repeatedly awarded the title "Best Designer of the Year" in the UK (1987, 1994, 1995, 1997). In 2001 he received the Order of the British Empire, in 2008 - the French Order of the Legion of Honor.

As for his personal life, today few people doubt that John Galliano is gay, so he had a relationship with his own stylist Alexis Rocher.

But in 2011, luck changed Galliano, in March he was fired from the Dior House for anti-Semitic remarks in one of the Paris bars. And 91% of the shares of the John Galliano House he created belong to LVMH. Many colleagues hastened to condemn him. Galliano supported Kate Moss: she chose his dress for the wedding ceremony in July 2011, Galliano was also among the guests invited to her wedding. What and where John Galliano will continue to work on is not yet known, but in the long run he will not be left without work.

John Galliano (John Galliano, full name Juan Carlos Antonio Galliano Guillén)  - It is considered the most shocking fashion designer of English origin. Fame brought him to the stupor of the avant-garde collections. Gagliano has repeatedly been awarded the most prestigious awards in France and Britain.

Short biography of John Galliano (John Galliano)

John Galliano was born in Gibraltar on November 28, 1960 in an international family: his father was an Englishman with Italian roots, and his mother was a purebred Spanish woman. My father worked as a plumber, and my mother was a housewife. Parents loved their children very much, so they tried to instill in them a taste for a rich colorful life: the children learned to dance flamenco and were always dressed neatly, like "from the needle."

When John Galliano turns 6, his family moves to London. Here he enters the very prestigious College of “Art and Design of St. Martin”, while working at the local National Theater.

In 1985, John Galliano, defending his graduate work, implemented based on the French Revolution, presents the world eight do-it-yourself outfits. This small collection amazes even the owners of the avant-garde boutique “Brown”, so they redeem it and put it up for sale right away. The first buyer of the outfit from John Galliano was Diane Ross, who acquired a unique vest for herself. With this little thing, the story of John Galliano as a fashion designer began.

“It was a crazy summer,” he says. “My relatives went to Spain, and when I settled in their house, I started scribbling one outfit after another. I bought fabrics myself, dyed them, sewed outfits and transported them myself.”

Teaming up with headwear designer Stephen Johnson and securing financial support from Joan Burstein, Galliano decides to present his debut collection at the annual British High Fashion Week. John manages to get the public to look at the world of high fashion with a fresh look, although these views were extremely ambiguous. Before the collection was demonstrated, Galliano doused absolutely all the models with water and sent them to the podium - this is an extraordinary decision that will shock the audience. At the same show, John meets the already famous publisher Amanda Harleck, who later becomes his personal stylist. About a year later, Galliano presents another successful collection called Fallen Angels. With the support of the new Danish businessman Peder Bertelsen, he manages to showcase his masterpieces in Paris.

In 1988, John Galliano and Stephen Robinson create the Blanche Dubois collection. For this creation, Galliano is awarded the title of "Best Designer of the Year." This achievement opened new doors for John in the fashion world. Some time after this show, John invites Balenciaga House, as a designer. Galliano has been working in this fashion house for two years. Month after month, he creates unique things that delight his fans, but Galliano did not succeed in reaching his creative climax.

With the onset of the 90s, a crisis comes into the world of fashion that forces John Galliano to leave London and go to Paris. Arriving in the "capital of fashion", John is homeless and penniless. With housing and a place to work, friends help him. Galliano immediately plunges into the work of a designer, trying to make money or find at least some support for the implementation of more global projects.

After some time, Galliano accidentally met with the editor of the American magazine "Vogue" (Vogue) Anna Wintour. Admired by the talent of the young designer, Wintour takes him under his care. She helps him with his work and persuades the familiar socialite Sao Schulberger to allow a new collection to be shown in her mansion, which is located in the very center of Paris. The collection consisted of 17 completely black outfits in which models such as Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell defended at this show. The success of the collection was indescribable - it just “blew up” Paris.

All the female images created by John Galliano are always thought out to the smallest detail. One of the most famous images created by this designer is “Princess Lucretius”. Galliano once said about this image: “I am always inspired by a person. I imagine a woman, what she wears, how she does it, where she lives and who her lovers can be. ”

In 1995, Galliano's talent attracted the attention of Bernard Arnault, who happily invites him to the post of creative director in the House. After working for a year at Givenchy, John receives a job invitation to. Galliano accepts the invitation and becomes the chief designer of the House of Dior, breathing new fashion trends into it. In his first year at Dior, John Galliano presents a collection that becomes a harbinger of such a direction as glamor. John works without respite, releasing 12 collections a year. Dior sales are beginning to grow, and personalities from the star elite of the whole world are beginning to come to the shows of the collections of Gagliano.

In the fall of 1997, Galliano first turned his eyes to Russia, opening the first Dior boutique in Moscow.
After some time, John Galliano opens his Fashion House, which is located in the squares of an old abandoned doll factory. John begins to lead a double life - working simultaneously in two fashion houses.

It is fascinating to contemplate that when creating new images for the collection, Galliano always changes his image. John, perhaps, is the only designer whose appearance on the catwalk is an interesting show.
John Galliano is more a genius than just a designer. He not only possesses the art of creating beautiful images, but he also has some unique human magnetism. This feature allows him to find a common language with a huge number of people, which greatly simplifies life in a rather insidious world of fashion.

Just before the show, John, driven by some unknown force, pours water on the models and releases them in such a way onto the catwalk.

3. Collection “Blanche Dubois”

The next collection of the fashion designer, entitled “Blanche Dubois,” comes out in just a year. It is dedicated to the main character of Tennessee Williams' play "Desire Tram". Strange as it may seem, Japanese couturiers inspired her creation. He borrowed the asymmetric cut of clothes from them. This collection brought him the honorary title of "Best Designer of the Year", as well as success and universal recognition.

4. The collection of “17 models”

In March 1994, John Galliano presents a collection that has become the hallmark of the master. Interestingly, the creation of 17 models took Galliano only 15 days. Absolutely all dresses in the collection were sewn from black crepe on a satin lining. World famous models such as Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista and Kate Moss were invited to represent them. Outfits shocked the entire then world of fashion.

5. Collection “African”

In 1997, John Galliano creates his first collection for Christian Dior. Dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the fashion house, it became a real sensation. The collection was called "Africans" - in it the fashion designer combined the motifs of the historical costume of the Art Nouveau era and the glamorous chic of the 1930s with ethnic elements. Fantastic hairstyles and makeup on the faces of fashion models reminded of primitive tribes, and African jewelry from multi-colored beads turned into openwork dresses.
