Features and description of the English rose

English roses are a relatively new variety that became known to the world just over 50 years ago. It was in the 20th and early 21st centuries that English roses were bred by the English enthusiast farmer David Austin, who laid the foundation for a whole generation of roses. It all started in the 50s of the 20th century, when David Austin in France saw bushes of ancient varieties of tea roses. His dream at that moment was to create the same beautiful roses with a charming aroma, but with a much greater variety of shades. It was from that moment that David began many years of work on breeding varieties of English roses, who switched public attention from the standard glass-shaped rose to a whole string of rose bud shapes. David Austin made you admire not only the rose flowers, but also the whole bush, which is undoubtedly the main thing when growing roses in the garden.

To create a new variety of English rose, David Austin and his friend Thomas Graham crossed the ancient Gallic rose “Belle Isis” and the modern floribunda. The result of this work exceeded all expectations - a new rose variety “Constance Spry” was born, which was characterized by tall and beautiful bushes with large flowers with the scent of myrrh. The famous breeder sought to develop English rose varieties with continuous flowering and excellent disease resistance. It took him a while to get an excellent result. However, over time, 12 excellent varieties of ostina received the “Mark of Quality” award from the British Royal Horticultural Society, which is awarded only to plant varieties that are most resistant to damage.

The main feature of English rose varieties is their enchanting aroma, which can be completely different depending on the specific variety. There are no scentless flowers among the roses; you can find rose bushes with a fruity aroma or the aroma of delicious tea, as well as with the long-forgotten aroma of myrrh.

Description of the English rose:

  • The English rose is not a separate classification. Today, all roses bred by breeder Austin are classified as scrub or bush roses.
  • The name English roses in Russia is most often replaced by Ostinki, which is very suitable for these delicate flowers.
  • The famous English roses are distinguished by their compact and beautiful bush, which can reach a height of 1.2-1.5 meters, although some varieties can grow 2-2.5 m.
  • You can distinguish English park roses or bush and climbing roses, which are also popular among gardeners.
  • The English rose bush is quite strong and can easily support dense inflorescences. The lower shoots hang down to the ground.
  • English roses are distinguished by a huge variety of inflorescence shapes. The most popular flower shapes are pompom, deep bowl, open bowl, shallow bowl, rosette and cross rosette. Breeder David Austin rejected varieties with cone-shaped flowers.
  • English rose flowers can be single, semi-double, double or densely double, depending on the number of petals. In some varieties, one flower can contain up to 150-200 petals.
  • The flowers evenly cover the entire bush, and can bloom singly or be collected in small clusters.
  • English roses can come in a variety of shades, but the inflorescences of this variety are predominantly distinguished by delicate and pastel shades. You won't find English beauty with bright red or purple buds, but there are many varieties with cream, pink, yellow and orange flowers.
  • The main feature of English roses is their aroma. It was the breeding of rose varieties with an incredible scent that became the main goal of the breeder. All varieties of English rose can be divided by their aroma: the aroma of delicious tea, a fruity aroma, the classic aroma of old roses, musk and myrrh.
  • One of the features of English roses is the change in inflorescences and aroma depending on climatic conditions and time of day. A rose can smell completely different in the morning than in the evening.
  • Since English roses come from the foggy islands of England, they prefer to grow in the shade; they only need to be in the sun for 4-5 hours.
  • These are quite demanding flowers to care for, but there are varieties that are distinguished by good resistance to disease and frost.

Variety of English rose varieties

Today, about 200 different varieties of English rose are officially known, which have a variety of appearance features, flower shape and color, as well as aroma. Here is a description of the most popular varieties of this type of rose.

  • Variety "Abraham Derby". This variety is very popular in Russia. It was released in 1985. This English rose has the largest flowers of this variety, which reach 12-14 cm in diameter. The flowers of the Abraham Derby variety are cup-shaped and densely double - have up to 150 petals. It is the shape of the inflorescences that this variety most closely resembles the classic ancient varieties of roses. In the center the petals have an apricot tint, and towards the edges they become soft pink. Flowers can bloom one at a time or in clusters of three. This variety of English rose is disease resistant and can be grown in the garden as a bush variety or climbing variety.

  • Variety "Thomas Graham". This variety was named after David Austin's friend and assistant in breeding English roses. It is a large and strong bush that can grow on average 1.5-3 meters. Due to its high growth and strong shoots, this rose is used as a trellis and placed on supports. Flowers can be collected in large brushes of 5-7 pieces. The flower is quite large in size, can reach approximately 7-10 cm in diameter. It is double, as it consists of approximately 75 petals. When in bud, the flower has a delicate peach hue, but as it blooms it becomes a rich yellow color, which is the main advantage of this variety. It was for this sunny color that the Thomas variety was inducted into the World Rose Hall of Fame, which consists of only 14 representatives. The flowers of this English rose have a pleasant tea aroma. It has good resistance to diseases and frost.

  • Variety "Benjamin Britten". A fairly young variety of English rose, was bred in 2001. It is represented by a fairly strong and branched bush, which can reach approximately 90-100 cm in height. The bush of this English rose is abundantly covered with foliage. The flowers are cup-shaped, but when fully opened they take on the shape of a rosette. The variety has a beautiful shade of flowers. They are predominantly red, but with subtle shades of orange. This rose is resistant to some diseases.

  • Variety "William Shakespeare". This variety appeared in gardening twice. The first time was in 1987, but it turned out to be very unstable to diseases, so the breeder improved it. This variety of English rose of the red group, therefore, always attracts attention with its large, dense flowers. One flower can consist of approximately 120 petals. At the beginning of flowering, the flowers are a bright red color, which eventually turns purple. The bush is large in size and has a rather powerful shape. It can reach a height of approximately 120 cm. According to David Austin and gardeners, this variety is the best red rose.

  • Variety "Pat Austin". This variety was bred in 1995 and bears the name of the wife of the famous breeder David Austin. It is an extensive bush up to 120 cm in height. The flowers are large in size, approximately 12 cm in diameter. They are semi-double in shape and consist of 56 petals. During flowering, they bloom one at a time or in clusters of 3-7 pieces. They are distinguished by their unusual color: copper with a slight pink tint. It has good resistance to diseases and frost.

  • Variety "Princess Margaret". It is a shrub up to 150 cm in height. The English rose variety Princess Margaret blooms with large, rosette-shaped inflorescences of apricot with hints of orange. Has a strong fruity aroma.

English rose propagation

The English rose can be propagated in exactly the same ways as other varieties of this flower. For the English beauty, a suitable method of propagation is by cuttings, layering and offspring, as well as grafting. Each of the above methods has a number of features that must be taken into account if you are planning to grow English roses on your own site. Experienced gardeners and rose lovers use grafting to propagate them, which is more effective and productive.

English rose grafting

  • To propagate roses by grafting, you can use cuttings or buds; the latter are used much more often.
  • First of all, it is necessary to grow a rootstock onto which the English rose will subsequently be grafted. The original David Austin rose is only grafted onto Rose Loxa rootstock, which is significantly different from the rootstock used in our area. Russian gardeners use Rose canina for these purposes.
  • It takes 2-3 years to grow a full-fledged rootstock. First, you need to collect rosa canina seeds and place them in damp sand for several months for stratification.
  • Seeds for the rootstock are sown in mid-autumn to a depth of about 4 cm. In the spring, when the leaves appear, you can pinch the root of the seedlings and prick them.
  • For grafting, seedlings are selected whose root collar thickness is at least 7 mm.
  • Next, on an adult English rose bush, you need to select healthy and mature shoots with buds.
  • After cutting, remove all the leaves, leaving only the petiole with buds.
  • On the grown rootstock, clean the root collar from the soil and wipe it with a rag. Next, you need to make a cut in the shape of the letter T. The vertical line of the cut should be 2.5 cm deep, and the horizontal line 1 cm. On the rootstock shoot, you need to cut off a bud with a piece of wood about 2 cm long.
  • After this, carefully holding the scion by the shield, insert it into the cut made from the bottom up. The protruding part of the shield needs to be cut off.
  • The graft must be well wrapped with a special film. The results will appear in 2 weeks.

Propagation of English roses by offspring

Park roses, which include the English rose, can reproduce using root shoots, which appear in large numbers during the season. There is no need to rush to transplant such offspring, as their root system is initially very weak. However, after about a year they will be strong enough to withstand the process of separation from the mother bush. It is best to carry out separation in early spring, when the snow melts.

Propagation of English roses by cuttings

  • Also a very popular method of propagating English roses.
  • For planting material, cuttings are prepared from well-ripened shoots of the current year. It is necessary to cut cuttings approximately 15-20 cm long, the main thing is that they have 3 leaves.
  • After preparing the cuttings, you need to cut off 2 leaves on each side, leaving only one at the top.
  • On your site, choose a place hidden from the sun, quite quiet. Dig it thoroughly and clear it of weeds, loosen it and level it.
  • Plant the prepared cuttings at a distance of approximately 15-20 cm from each other. At the same time, they must be buried in such a way that only a leaf remains on the surface.
  • After planting, be sure to cover each cutting with an open-necked plastic bottle.
  • When the cold weather begins, the cuttings must be carefully covered and sprinkled with snow.
  • Already in the spring you will be able to see the first leaves on your cuttings, but it is recommended to transplant English rose cuttings to a permanent place only after a year. At the same time, it is important to dig them out together with a lump of earth so as not to expose them root system.

Propagation of English roses by layering

  • This method of reproduction is considered the simplest. It is important for him that the rose bush has sufficiently long and flexible shoots located close to the ground.
  • Select a sufficiently long and strong shoot from the English rose bush and bend it to the ground. Next, make a small cut on the bottom side and secure the layer well so that it does not rise.
  • After this, sprinkle it with soil, leaving only the top.
  • During the entire rooting period of the cuttings, it is important to water and remove weeds.
  • After about a year in the spring, you can safely disconnect the young English rose seedling from the mother bush and replant it in a permanent place.

Preparation before planting English roses

The English rose is a guest from the foggy islands of England, so before planting this beauty on your site, it is important to carefully prepare and follow all the rules for choosing seedlings and planting sites.

Stage 1. Selection of variety and seedlings of English rose

  • English roses are accustomed to the foggy and damp climate of the English islands, so all varieties have characteristics of growth in such conditions. However, the climatic conditions in Russia are slightly different, so of the 200 known varieties of English roses, only a third of them can be grown here.
  • Unfortunately, there is no official branch of the David Austin nursery in Russia, so choosing the optimal variety is a little more difficult. You can focus on varieties bred in Canadian nurseries, since our climatic zone is somewhat similar.
  • Today, there are no longer the difficulties with purchasing English rose seedlings that existed just a few years ago. Previously, many gardeners, wanting to buy an overseas beauty, purchased seedlings of ordinary tea roses from unscrupulous sellers.
  • Of course, today you can also buy English roses only from trusted sellers, in garden centers and large nurseries where they professionally breed various roses.
  • When purchasing English rose seedlings from nurseries, you will be sure that the young plants are adapted to your climatic conditions.
  • Before purchasing roses, carefully inspect each seedling. There should be no dry or damaged areas on it. The presence of signs of diseases and pests is unacceptable.
  • Do not take risks and do not buy seedlings of English roses in spontaneous markets and on roadsides from strangers. So you can fall for scammers and end up with a completely un-English beauty.

Stage 2. Choosing a place to plant an English rose

  • Since all varieties of English roses were bred in Foggy Albion, they need to find a fairly shady place on your site.
  • For the full growth of these flowers, 4-5 hours of sun exposure on the site is enough.
  • You can also choose a slightly more illuminated area, so your bush will not stretch out much.
  • The place must be protected from strong winds and is located on some elevation, since the English rose does not tolerate flooding with melt water.
  • The choice of place to plant an English rose will depend on the garden composition you are planning. Roses can be planted in flower beds, flower beds, along borders and garden paths, and even in containers.

Stage 3. Selection and preparation of soil for planting English roses

  • English roses are not whimsical in choosing soil for planting. They can grow on almost any soil.
  • However, to get perfectly beautiful rose bushes, select humus-rich soil with a neutral reaction. Slight fluctuations in acidity in two directions are allowed.
  • The soil for planting must be well permeable to air and moisture.
  • Before planting, it is important to carefully prepare the area you have chosen. To do this, dig up the ground well, remove all weeds and add a little rotted manure. After which the area needs to be loosened and leveled.

The process of planting an English rose

  • Both spring and autumn are suitable for planting English roses.
  • Before planting, it is important to prepare the seedlings well. Their roots need to be trimmed a little and soaked in a root former solution for a day, and then immediately planted in the selected area. Under no circumstances should the rose roots be allowed to dry out.
  • While the seedlings are soaking in the solution, you can begin preparing planting holes for planting.
  • In the area you have chosen, dig planting holes, the size of which should be approximately 50 cm deep and 50 cm wide. In this case, the distance between individual seedlings should be at least 50 cm.
  • Prepare a soil mixture suitable for planting rose seedlings. Take fertile garden soil and the same amount of humus and peat and pour some into the holes.
  • After this, you need to pour 1 bucket of water into each hole and leave it like that for about a day.
  • Next, you can begin planting English rose seedlings.
  • Place each seedling in a planting hole and straighten the roots well. Also make sure that the grafting site is at least 7 cm underground.
  • Cover the seedlings with soil and compact them gently with your hands.
  • The day after planting, water the seedlings generously. It is also important to hill them so that a more powerful root system develops.

Agricultural technology for growing English roses: secrets and nuances of care

To obtain beautiful English rose bushes, it is important to provide them with timely and constant care, which includes watering, fertilizing, pruning, pest control and preparation for winter. Only by adhering to all the basic rules and nuances of growing English roses, you will get a gorgeous rose bush covered with beautiful and fragrant flowers.

Watering an English rose

English roses prefer to grow in well-moistened soil, so it is important to constantly monitor its moisture. It is necessary to water the bushes as the top layer of soil dries out; 5 liters of water should be spent on one bushy plant, and 15 liters on climbing plants. It is also important to lightly shake the English rose bushes after each rain, since moisture can cause a variety of unpleasant diseases.

Loosening and mulching English roses

Periodically, the soil around English roses must be weeded and any weeds removed. To ensure that the ground allows air and moisture to pass through, loosen the areas under the bushes from time to time. At the same time, try not to damage the young shoots or root system. After loosening, you can pour humus mulch into the tree trunk circle. This way you will protect the plant from excessive evaporation of moisture and add fertilizer to the root system.

Feeding English roses

During the season it is important to feed the English rose with fertilizers. At the very beginning of growth, it is necessary to apply special fertilizers for roses. Then in June, during active foliage growth, feed your beauty with nitrogen fertilizers. When buds begin to form on the bush, apply phosphorus fertilizers and calcium. A little potassium fertilizer can be added at the end of summer. However, with any feeding, strictly adhere to the dosage, even reducing it is allowed. so as not to harm the rose.

English rose pruning

Pruning is an important step in caring for English roses. The pruning technique will depend on the type of bushes you ultimately want. To grow small bushes with large flowers, cut the shoots in half. If you need large bushes with a lot of flowers on all shoots, they are cut back by one third. Climbing roses are pruned to only 1/5 of the length of the shoot. Sometimes English roses may need rejuvenating pruning. Also, cut off all diseased and weakened shoots every spring.

English rose - photo in landscape design

The English rose or Austin is a beauty that embodies the aristocracy of ancient rose varieties and the charm and brightness of modern breeding methods. By planting such a bush on your site, you will enjoy the sight of bright flowers with a wonderful aroma for many years.

English roses are an amazing result of selection, which combines the beauty and aroma of ancient varieties with the unpretentiousness and duration of flowering of the tea rose. This flower has won many hearts, and every self-respecting gardener dreams of at least one hybrid of this plant decorating his garden.

Rose is the queen of flowers. The shape of the flower, the variety of shades, the intoxicating aroma - everything about it is amazing. It’s just a pity that they don’t bloom for long, and they can’t please you with an abundance of buds on one stem. This is probably what the English farmer David Austin thought when he saw the ancient varieties of this beautiful plant. And the goal of his life was to grow a rose that would combine positive features all varieties of roses bred at that time.

He began his breeding experiments with ancient Gallic and modern roses of the Floribunda class. The painstaking process of pollination, collecting seeds, preparing and sowing, and then waiting long and agonizingly brought amazing results. Even the farmer himself did not expect such an impressive result: in front of him stood a tall bush, all strewn with large cup-shaped buds emitting a pleasant aroma. This is how the first English rose was born.

After his triumphant victory, David Austin not only did not stop, but with even greater effort began experimenting with different varieties of roses, creating more and more unusual flowers. Now he was proudly called a breeder.

Every year more and more varieties of English roses appear, and today there are more than 200 names. Due to their youth, they are still classified as Shrubs, bush roses. However, the steady increase in the number of new breeding species inevitably leads to the fact that they will soon be separated and classified as English.

An important aspect of developing new varieties is resistance to different climatic conditions. For this reason, branches of nurseries of this variety are appearing all over the world, provoking the emergence of new species characterized by unpretentiousness, frost resistance and many other positive characteristics.

Description of the flower

To understand how unique this flower is, you need to carefully study its distinctive characteristics and properties.

Everyone knows that the bush varieties of Queen of Flowers that are familiar to us have small buds and are practically odorless. The English rose is a bush densely strewn with huge flowers, exuding an indescribable, persistent aroma inherited from floribundas.

The English rose is also distinguished by its long flowering, which lasts up to 4 months. This can happen continuously or in 2 stages - in June and August.

Most varieties of this flower have the shape of a cup, rosette or pompom. According to the degree of bud opening, there are shallow, open and deep cups, cross-shaped and reverse-curved rosettes. Each of them consists of a huge number of delicate petals, while not only the number of flowers is surprising, but also their uniform arrangement throughout the bush.

English roses amaze with their variety of colors. They may be white. Pink, red, beige, soft purple. The most surprising thing was the breeding of a very rare yellow rose. In addition, during flowering, the petals tend to fade in the sun, as a result of which you can see buds of different shades on one bush.

They owe their popularity to the shape and size of the bush. In addition to the fact that there are dwarf and tall, dense and sparse, climbing varieties have been bred. Therefore, even the most picky gardener will find from among them exactly what he needs. The characteristics of the same variety of English rose may vary depending on climatic conditions.

Most species stand out for their ability to easily take root and bloom profusely even in constant shade. And this is not surprising if you remember the climate of England, the homeland of this flower. Shade-loving varieties that were used in the selection process also took part in the creation of this property.

Main disadvantages

No matter how much you would like to, you will have to add a small fly in the ointment to a huge barrel of honey. Like everything on earth, English roses have a number of disadvantages. There are very few of them, since David Austin was very picky about each new variety bred, destroying those that did not meet his high standards.

The first drawback only appears during prolonged rainy weather. This directly affects varieties that are distinguished by a deep cupped flower shape. Under the influence of drops of water, the bud cannot open, depriving others of the opportunity to enjoy its beauty and aroma.

Another drawback, although temporary, is the weakness of young branches. The florist wants to see a lush, voluminous bush, but what he gets is stems lying on the ground, strewn with flowers. It’s just that thin stems cannot support heavy buds. You can, of course, arrange support for them, but it’s enough to just wait until the bush gets stronger and can cope with this task on its own.

A surprise for the gardener may be the re-blooming of some varieties of English roses. The fact is that the first time the bush blooms with large and dense flowers, but the second time there are not enough flowers. Therefore, in some cases, weak repeated flowering of the same plant is observed.

Planting a plant

Ostinka was first brought to our region relatively recently, just over 10 years ago. And only the most cold-resistant varieties were awarded this honor.

You need to be very responsible when purchasing a seedling, since in our market it is very difficult to find a high-quality specimen that matches the variety. It is best to use the services of specialized nurseries that deliver to our country. If you are dealing with amateur gardeners, you need to meticulously examine the item you are purchasing and make sure that the person is conscientious, since under the guise of an expensive English rose you can buy a cheap tea rose or even a rose hip.

It is best to plant roses in September or October, depending on the region, well before frost to allow the plant to establish itself. If you wish, you can plant the bush in the spring.

This plant has no special requirements for the soil, the main thing is that it allows air to pass through and is away from destructive groundwater. It is best to prepare a mixture of soil and sand in advance, adding humus or peat if desired.

Before planting, the seedling should be kept in water for a while, and then the roots should be treated with a clay solution of water, clay and manure in a ratio of 10 parts of the first and 3 parts of the second and third components.

Pour plenty of water into the dug hole and allow it to be completely absorbed. Then the English roses are lowered into the hole so that the rootstock sinks to a depth of about 10 cm. The roots are thoroughly straightened and covered with substrate, compacting as it is added, the plant is watered and a small hill is created around the stems. The final step will be to trim the stems to 6-8 buds, all leaves must be removed.

Proper care

Caring for an English rose is practically no different from caring for other flowers of this species. It starts with spring pruning. To form a tall, spreading bush, weak thin shoots and branches damaged by frost are removed. To renew the bush and give it a more compact shape, all branches are cut 2/3 from the tips.

In order to form an even fence or border of flowering bushes, the branches on all bushes are cut to the same height. It should be remembered that the cutting tool must be sharp in order to obtain even cuts, without creases or side damage.

English roses should be watered as the soil dries out. The amount of watering depends on the type of plant: 5 liters will be enough for small bushes, but a climbing rose will have to pour 3 times more. You should not get carried away with fertilizers; it is enough to provide fertilizing 3 times during the entire period of flowering and growth.

When watering, you should try not to overwater the leaves - this can lead to bush disease. Even after rain, it is necessary to shake off excess moisture not only from the buds, but also from the leaves.

Like all roses, English roses require winter wrapping. To do this, use any suitable material and oilcloth, the main thing is that a distance of at least 10 cm is maintained between the layer of material and the stems. Climbing varieties are bent to the ground before wrapping.
